| This is an experimental publication dedicated to the thousands of women working in the telephone operating industry during the 1960s and later. Below you will find some excerpts from the documentary movie "The Phantom of the Operator" - a poetic film collage that documents the construction and rise of female telephone operators and their eventual replacement with computerized communications systems. (film by Caroline Martel. Canada. 2004. 66 min)

| (1) Your voice. Your voice will tell me a lot of things about you. Why? Because your voice is your appearance. If it is attractive. You are attractive. Because your voice is the only thing which can give me a picture of you.

| (2) There's something remarkable about Billy. '''She’s, well, a link.''' In a world where it's becoming more and more important for people to keep in touch, Billy and the other girls like her, the links between Joe Dokes and his shive he ran, between Centerville and Singapore. And an average tour of duty will bring her in contact with literally hundreds of individuals, housewives and business tycoons, beatniks and movie stars. And here sitting alone by no coincidence because she planted that way, is the second girl with a meet, Linda Pearce. A pal-abilities from back in north side high, but only recently transferred to this office. Which again by no coincidence, whatever brings up, the matter at hand, namely:

| Kelly, we've been friends ever since we were kids. What is it? You do, what are the other girls do and what do i do to get my speed back?

| So that's the answer for Linda. So simple, yet it means so much. Not nearly in, mark sensing, but in all operating for that matter, in the whole business of living in today's fast moving work. The habit of anticipating of overlapping. The habit of staying always one jump ahead.

| (4) Don't have to be around the telephone company long to know that it takes a lot of girls to keep the telephone business, humming a happy tune and we like it that way. The pretty blonde is Susie. And like, most telephone gals, she has a sense of humor and enjoys life on and off the job. And that's telephone business.

| (5) How did you become interested in operating work from sparsely?
| |
| —Well, one of my best friends is an operator. She started working for the telephone company, three years ago.
| |
| —I suppose, she's told you a lot about her work, she likes it so much.
| |
| —She's always talking about it.
| |
| —I noticed from your application, you graduated from high school last June.
| |
| —That's right, miss Rogers. In fact, it was the principal, Mr. Watkins, who first gave me the idea of applying. He thinks i'm well fitted for the work.

| —How does your mother feel about it?
| |
| —Oh, she's encouraged me to apply ever since i told her, i wanted to be an operator. And I presume it's Bradley. You know, it's customary for applicants to have a physical examination.

| —Yes, i do. And i'll be glad to take it at any time.
| |
| —That's fine.
| |
| —Thank you, mr. Rogers.
| |
| —The physical examination is simple. Just enough to make sure there is no physical reason why the applicant could not or should not make the profession of switchboard operation, her career. It is all part of that important responsibility selection. Heightened way to recorded. Heart lungs, nose, throat, or checked. General, physical condition is noted and the details entered in the medical department records.

| —You know, you're one of the crowd now, Miss Bradley.
| |
| —You've all been so kind and helpful. I've enjoyed every minute of the training.

| —You're going to like the regular work even more. Now, about tomorrow. Miss Bradley, when you report for duty, take position number 21, that will be your regular assignment and don't forget, i'll be there to help if you need me. Good luck, ms. Bradley.

| She is ready to merge her voice with a hundred thousand others. To become part of that invisible agency, to which we are accustomed to turn with so much trust. She's ready. More service.

| (6) “The voice with a smile” s a phrase getting dark more than 40 years in the history of the telephone company. But there's a lot behind that voice with a smile. There's a real person. And that person is you. So to help you express this personality, we have developed a program. The voice and courtesy program. We think you'll find it helpful not only in your work but in daily contacts with friends and family. Remember , when you're speaking on the telephone, your voice is you. Yeah. And, your smile. That makes you feel alive. I feel it makes me a better person. It makes me more understanding when i come into the morning and i sit down and i get a customer who's very rude, a very nasty. I can think to myself for maybe he had a hard day or maybe he has a problem, i don't understand. So all just try to be as nice and sweet as i can and serve them the best i can.

| (7) Group of young women from the nearby long distance exchange enjoy the summer sun, as they gaze over the towers of Notre Dame church. It must seem like the top of the world of them for the ground is 300 feet below and if they shall none will hear their voices. Though there are thousands of people within a mile, the words are lost completely in the surrounding air. Yet that their posts of duty and the adjacent building. Even their whispers can be heard thousands of miles away. And be heard in millions of homes. And places of business in other countries from the nearby united states, the cities of the old world to the audience and even far down below the equator. Transmitted and transported by the communications art that has been developed for the needs of all mankind.

| (8) Women workers do present problems, Joe. It's tough, I know. But there are thousands of others, just like you, all over the country facing the same problems, Joe. I’d admit that.

| —Women scare me. At least, they do in a factory.
| |
| —Who hell? Maybe the women who scared too, Joe. They’re not naturally familiar with mechanical principles, nor machines? I know, Joe. It takes time to make them feel at home but it can be done. It was easy as women workers, don't mind routine, repetitive work. They’re particularly good on work that requires high finger dexterity, or an unusual sense of accuracy.

| —You talk like a man who knows women?
| |
| —We'll see, Joe. We'll see. You know, women workers can be surprisingly good producers. And it helps a lot to get them all to a good start.

| (9) Well, ladies and gentlemen,
| |
|
| |
| of course, you know from what you've already heard that putting things in good shape for the new system has been quite a job. From then on, you will have a dependable electrical operator at your service. Instead of hearing the familiar “number, please” you will hear the dial tone which says the same thing electrically.

| Before you've got a number, you want to call. But the first thing you do it to pick up your telephone and listen for the dial tone. As soon as you hear the dial tones, you can start to dial a number.

| Here's the dial tone.
| |
| As mr. Johnson pointed out, it’s the same as an operator saying “number, please”. I'm sure if you follow these simple rules, you'll find your new dial telephones, easy to operate, convenient to use, and quick in service. Of course, you've got to understand that the dial system doesn't do away with a need for human operators. So don't worry you'll find operators just as before when you need them.

| (10) And now, a special report from the world of science. The scientists of Bell. Telephone laboratories have discovered this method of making voices visible. It enables them to find out more about the way, our speech works and of course, the more, they know, the more they can do to improve communications between us. The picture of a human voice contains the important information. So, by transmitting this information rather than the speech signal itself, we can transmit much more economically.

| (11) I'm glad to have this opportunity to tell you about the telephone switching centre of tomorrow. The electronic central office which is made possible by the magic of the transistor and other tiny but amazing devices invented by the Bell telephone laboratories. Imagine, if you can, an electronic brain operating at millions of the second speeds. I say brain, because the new electronic central office will almost think for itself. It will not only carry out instructions, you down into it, it will also remember instructions you provided earlier. These memory features will offer many convenient services I'm sure you'll be delighted with. As we look to the future, we see many extras for tomorrow's. Telephone users, one day, you may be able to call home and automatically turn off the oven or from the public telephone a couple of hundred miles away. Turn on your home air conditioner and have the house nice and cool when you return from your hot trip. It may even be possible to call and water the lawn during that dry spell when you are many miles away and vacation. Sounds fantastic, doesn't it? And we think you'll agree after seeing the many exhibits we have here, there is no end to telephone progress now or in century 21.
