INTRODUCTION
Every year, usually in february, the students of the Lens-based Media department are invited to present an hour-long program in EYE - as part of the annual EYE Research Lab.
"The Eye Research Labs provide space for a new generation of curators and artists to further develop their skills and to meet each other. Students from various art academies and universities are asked to put together a programme with their own work and films from the Eye collection. The Research Labs do not follow a strict format and are often a crossover between film and other art forms.
Academies that participate in the Research Labs are the Sandberg Institute, the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Leiden University, the Royal Academy of Art, the University of Amsterdam, the Piet Zwart Institute, the VR Academy and the Master Institute of Visual Cultures."

EYE is the leading museum for film and moving image art in the Netherlands.
In practice this means that as a group, the first year Lens-based students put together a program to be screened at EYE during this festival in february. Usually each student makes a short moving image work with a duration of a couple of minutes.
THE PRE-EYE THEMATIC SEMINAR
To kick off this process, we open the year with an intensive "make a short moving image prototype in two weeks" seminar. The objective is to introduce the students tot EYE Research Lab, and in a very short timespan go through all the basic steps involved in getting a short moving image piece on screen.
DAY 1 General introduction of EYE Research Lab Watch a selection of previous works by PZI students presented at EYE Research Lab Introduction of the assignment Discuss the option of a common theme of starting point (not obligatory, but something to discuss as a group). Discuss the notion of "proof of concept" or prototyping as an attitude towards practical work.
DAY 2 Develop short proposals to present to the group. Presentations of proposals (group crit)
DAY 3 Coaching or tutorials individually or in small groups.
DAY 4 Screening of the films and post-discussion. (often coinciding with the official kick-off of the EYE Research Lab at the end of the same day).
