Collective session: Annotating Ghost Files

For this collaborative session in the community based library Leeszaal in Rotterdam West I prepared a bunch of postcards with my initial thoughts, sketches, photos … around the idea of Ghost Files. The audience of the event was invited to a collective annotation session. I was sitting at a table with all the cards spread out and up to six people could join me at the same time. Whenever there was a rotation and someone new came to the table, I would briefly explain my curiosity in Ghost Files and invite them to think along with me. The annotation process was manifold: Some participants directly reacted to or intervened with the content on the cards, others were speculating and adding new ideas, questions and narratives. By writing, sketching and drawing on the cards, some contributors would create a new starting point for the next person. The atmosphere was focused and most of the time silent, but once in a while a question would be formulated or read aloud. At one time a question evolved into a whole conversation, and the outcome of that talk was then transcribed back onto the cards.
