In order to proceed to the second part of the project I will conduct a workshop on the topic of biases:


Part I (25'): Introduction regarding the topic (10') and quiz (15')

The workshop will begin with a (Kahoot!) quiz, challenging common knowledge about what biases are and how they affect us.

Part II (30') Discussion

A few words regarding relevant research and discussion with the group. This part can become integrated to the quiz in Part I. In this sense, the quiz can be used as a prompting mechanism for providing information and for further discussion.


Part III (60') Interviews

The participants will be asked to record their answers to a series of questions regarding biases and upload them to a relevant wiki page. (Parts of) their answers will be used in the songs that will be the 'material' outcome of this part of the project. They will be given 30' to answer and the rest 30' we will listen to the recordings and discuss.

I would also like to point out to them that their understanding and answers may have been affected due to our opening quiz and discussion and that every little thing may contribute to the building up or the dismantling of biases.

Cognitive biases

Main types of cognitive (in the broader sense) biases:


1. Cognitive Biases

These are systematic patterns of deviation from norm or rationality in judgment.

   Confirmation Bias: Tendency to search for, interpret, and remember information that confirms one’s preconceptions.
   Anchoring Bias: Relying too heavily on the first piece of information encountered (the "anchor") when making decisions.
   Hindsight Bias: Belief that an event was predictable after it has already happened.
   Availability Heuristic: Overestimating the importance of information that comes readily to mind.
   Dunning-Kruger Effect: Overestimating one's abilities in areas where one lacks knowledge or expertise.
   Status Quo Bias: Preference for the current state of affairs over change.
   Negativity Bias: Tendency to focus more on negative events than positive ones.
   Framing Effect: Drawing different conclusions based on how the same information is presented.
   Sunk Cost Fallacy: Continuing a course of action due to previously invested resources (time, money, effort).
   Self-Serving Bias: Attributing success to oneself and failures to external factors.

2. Social Biases

Biases that relate to interactions with others or how individuals perceive groups.

   In-group Bias: Favoring members of one’s own group over those of others.
   Out-group Homogeneity Bias: Tendency to see out-group members as more similar to each other than they really are.
   Stereotyping: Overgeneralizing about a group based on limited information.
   Halo Effect: Allowing one positive trait to overshadow other aspects of a person or situation.
   Horn Effect: The opposite of the Halo Effect, where one negative trait overshadows others.
   Attribution Bias: Attributing others' behavior to their character rather than situational factors.
   Fundamental Attribution Error: Underestimating situational influences and overestimating personal characteristics in others' behaviors.
   Just-World Hypothesis: Believing that people get what they deserve, leading to victim-blaming.

3. Memory Biases

Biases that affect the way we recall past events.

   Rosy Retrospection: Remembering past events as being more positive than they were.
   Misinformation Effect: Memory distortion due to misleading information presented after an event.
   False Memory: Recollection of events that did not actually occur.
   Spacing Effect: Tendency to remember items better when studied at spaced intervals rather than all at once.
   Recency Effect: Tendency to remember the last items in a sequence better than earlier items.
   Primacy Effect: Remembering the first items in a sequence better than later ones.

4. Decision-Making Biases

Biases that distort judgment or decisions.

   Loss Aversion: The tendency to prefer avoiding losses over acquiring equivalent gains.
   Overconfidence Bias: Overestimating one's knowledge, abilities, or control over outcomes.
   Base Rate Fallacy: Ignoring statistical information in favor of specific information.
   Gambler’s Fallacy: Believing that past random events affect the probability of future ones (e.g., thinking a coin toss is "due" for heads after a string of tails).
   Optimism Bias: Belief that negative events are less likely to happen to oneself.
   Endowment Effect: Valuing things more simply because they belong to you.

5. Motivational Biases

Biases driven by emotions or desires.

   Wishful Thinking: Accepting information or outcomes that align with desires or hopes.
   Egocentric Bias: Overestimating the extent to which others share your views, attitudes, and beliefs.
   Optimistic Bias: Expecting favorable outcomes over realistic outcomes.
   Belief Bias: Judging an argument based on the believability of its conclusion rather than on the logical structure of the argument.

6. Cultural Biases

Biases rooted in cultural perspectives or norms.

   Ethnocentrism: Judging another culture solely by the values and standards of one's own culture.
   Cultural Myopia: The tendency to think that one's own culture is superior to others or is the "default."
   Language Bias: Judging people based on the language or dialect they use.

These biases influence our perception, memory, judgment, and decision-making processes, often leading us to flawed conclusions or irrational actions. There are many specific biases, with researchers identifying hundreds depending on the field of study.

Systemic biases

Beyond cognitive biases, there are other broad categories of biases that influence thinking, decision-making, and behavior. There are more than 10 sorts of widely recognized bias categories. These include cognitive, technological (algorithmic), institutional and cultural biases, among others.


1. Statistical Biases

These occur in data collection, analysis, and interpretation, leading to incorrect or misleading results.

   Selection Bias: When certain groups or data are more likely to be selected than others, leading to unrepresentative samples.
   Survivorship Bias: Concentrating on the people or things that "survived" a process and overlooking those that didn't because they are no longer visible.
   Sampling Bias: Collecting data from a sample that does not accurately reflect the larger population.
   Confirmation Bias in Research: Tendency for researchers to unintentionally (or intentionally) favor results that support their hypotheses.
   Publication Bias: The tendency for journals to publish positive findings over negative or inconclusive results.


2. Algorithmic Biases (Technological Biases)

Biases that occur in the design and implementation of algorithms, particularly in machine learning and AI systems.

   Training Data Bias: When algorithms are trained on data that reflects existing social biases (e.g., gender, race), leading to biased outputs.
   Automation Bias: Over-reliance on automated systems or algorithms, trusting them over human judgment even when they make errors.
   Overfitting: A model becomes biased towards the specific training data and performs poorly on unseen data.
   Bias in Predictive Policing: Algorithms used in policing that are biased due to over-policing in certain communities, leading to feedback loops.

3. Cultural and Societal Biases

These biases are ingrained in social norms, values, or structures and can affect how different groups are perceived or treated.

   Gender Bias: Unequal treatment or assumptions about individuals based on gender. Example: assuming leadership qualities are more associated with men.
   Racial Bias: Discrimination or stereotyping based on race. Example: Assuming certain races are more likely to engage in criminal activity.
   Class Bias: Favoritism or prejudice based on socioeconomic status. Example: Assuming wealthier people are more competent.
   Religious Bias: Discrimination or preference based on religion. Example: Prejudice against certain religious groups.
   Age Bias: Stereotyping or discriminating against individuals based on their age (e.g., "too young" or "too old" for certain tasks).
   Heteronormativity: Bias that assumes heterosexuality is the norm and treats other sexual orientations as deviations.

4. Media Biases

These biases arise in journalism, reporting, and the dissemination of information.

   Partisan Bias: Media outlets favoring one political party or ideology over others.
   Sensationalism: The tendency to focus on exciting, dramatic, or shocking stories rather than more important but less flashy topics.
   Gatekeeping Bias: Media controlling which stories are covered and which are ignored, thereby shaping public perception.
   Framing Bias: The way a news story is framed (e.g., language used, choice of facts) can influence how it is interpreted.

5. Economic Biases

Biases related to financial systems, markets, and economic decision-making.

   Market Bias: Preferences for established market players over new entrants, which can stifle innovation.
   Price Anchoring: People base their decisions on a reference price even if it’s irrelevant or misleading (e.g., sales discounts).
   Risk Aversion Bias: A tendency to avoid risks even when the potential rewards outweigh the potential downsides.
   Hyperbolic Discounting: The tendency to prefer smaller, immediate rewards over larger, future rewards.

6. Institutional Biases

These refer to biases that are embedded in the policies, practices, and structures of organizations or institutions.

   Systemic Racism: When policies and practices within an institution perpetuate inequalities based on race.
   Glass Ceiling Bias: Invisible barriers within organizations that prevent certain groups, especially women and minorities, from advancing.
   Educational Bias: Inequities in education systems, such as underfunded schools in marginalized areas or biased curricula.

7. Perceptual Biases

These biases are related to how people perceive the world and the stimuli around them.

   Visual Bias: Tendency to give preference to information that is presented visually, potentially overlooking other important types of data.
   Auditory Bias: Giving more weight to verbal information over visual or textual information.
   Size Bias: Larger objects or ideas are often given more attention or assumed to be more important than smaller ones.
   Perceptual Contrast Effect: When the perception of something is influenced by comparisons to recent experiences (e.g., a moderate option looks more reasonable next to an extreme one).

8. Implicit Biases

These are subconscious biases that influence behavior and attitudes, often without the individual being aware of them.

   Implicit Racial Bias: Subconscious preferences or aversions based on race, often reflected in discriminatory behaviors.
   Implicit Gender Bias: Unconscious assumptions about gender roles that affect judgment, decisions, and interactions.
   Affinity Bias: Preferring people who are similar to oneself, such as in appearance, background, or beliefs.
   Name Bias: Associating certain characteristics or assumptions with individuals based on their names (e.g., favoring names that sound more familiar or prestigious).

9. Political Biases

Biases that affect political judgments and behaviors.

   Ideological Bias: Viewing issues through the lens of one's own political beliefs and disregarding alternative viewpoints.
   Polarization Bias: Exaggerating differences between groups, leading to increasingly extreme positions and reduced willingness to compromise.
   Groupthink: When a desire for harmony or conformity in a group leads to irrational or dysfunctional decision-making.

10. Moral and Ethical Biases

These biases affect how we make decisions related to ethics and morality.

   Moral Licensing: After doing something good, individuals feel "licensed" to do something bad or morally questionable.
   Ethical Blind Spots: People fail to recognize unethical behavior in themselves while noticing it in others.
   Moral Luck: Judging a person or action based on outcomes that are beyond the individual's control, leading to uneven assessments of morality.

11. Environmental Biases

Biases arising from our relationship with and attitudes toward the environment.

   Not-In-My-Backyard (NIMBY) Bias: People support environmental policies as long as they don't affect them personally (e.g., opposing a wind farm near their home).
   Pro-Environment Bias: A tendency to view behaviors or policies as good simply because they appear environmentally friendly, even if their actual impact is negligible.

Biases are typically viewed as negative because they distort our thinking and lead to unfair or irrational judgments. However, in certain contexts, biases can actually serve useful, adaptive, or positive functions.

Positive Biases

While biases are often seen as flaws in judgment, they can also have adaptive benefits, helping individuals and groups make quicker decisions, avoid risks, and foster cooperation. In certain contexts, biases may lead to pragmatic, efficient, or positive outcomes, especially when they promote resilience, social harmony, or cognitive efficiency. That said, it’s important to remain aware of their potential downsides and strive for a balance between beneficial biases and objective, fair decision-making.

Here are several ways biases can be positive or beneficial:

1. Efficient Decision-Making (Heuristics)

Many cognitive biases stem from heuristics—mental shortcuts that help us make decisions quickly. While these shortcuts can sometimes lead to errors, they often allow us to make rapid and effective decisions in everyday life, especially when time and cognitive resources are limited.

  • Example: Availability Heuristic: The availability heuristic causes us to judge the likelihood of events based on how easily examples come to mind. This can be useful in situations where speed is more important than accuracy. For instance, if you remember multiple news stories about car accidents, it may lead you to drive more cautiously, even if your perception of the actual risk is exaggerated.
  • Example: Recognition Heuristic: When faced with a decision between two options, people tend to choose the one they recognize. While this can lead to suboptimal choices, in many cases, choosing the familiar option is a reasonable and efficient strategy.

2. Survival and Adaptation

Biases that helped our ancestors survive in dangerous environments may still have positive effects in certain situations today. Some biases are deeply rooted in evolution, guiding behavior in ways that maximize survival.

  • Example: Negativity Bias: The tendency to focus more on negative information than positive information is often seen as detrimental. However, this bias has evolutionary advantages, as it helps us prioritize potential dangers and avoid harm. It makes us more sensitive to threats, which can still be useful in modern-day situations like personal safety.
  • Example: Loss Aversion: Loss aversion makes people more likely to avoid risks that could lead to loss rather than pursue equivalent gains. While this bias can sometimes result in overly cautious behavior, it can also prevent reckless decision-making, such as avoiding dangerous investments.

3. Social Cohesion and Group Identity

Some biases can foster social cohesion and group identity, which are important for collective survival and cooperation. Biases that lead us to favor people who are similar to us or part of our group can strengthen trust, bonding, and collaboration within the group.

  • Example: In-group Bias: The tendency to favor members of one's own group over outsiders can create a strong sense of belonging and trust within communities, families, or teams. While this bias can contribute to discrimination against out-groups, it can also promote solidarity, mutual support, and collaboration within groups.
  • Example: Social Proof: This is the bias to follow the behavior of others when uncertain. In social settings, this can lead to herd behavior, which, in the right context, promotes group harmony and helps individuals make decisions based on collective wisdom. For instance, people may follow a crowd in an emergency, assuming the crowd is responding correctly.

4. Confidence and Self-Enhancement

Some biases help maintain confidence, self-esteem, and motivation, which are essential for personal growth, resilience, and taking action. By perceiving oneself in a more favorable light, these biases can encourage people to take risks, persevere, and achieve goals.

  • Example: Optimism Bias: The tendency to believe that positive outcomes are more likely than negative ones can inspire people to take chances and pursue goals they might otherwise avoid. While this bias can lead to overconfidence, it also fuels resilience and hope, helping individuals overcome challenges.
  • Example: Self-Serving Bias: The tendency to attribute successes to personal qualities and failures to external factors can protect self-esteem and mental health. By preserving a positive self-image, people can remain motivated and avoid feelings of helplessness or depression.

5. Moral and Ethical Benefits

Certain biases may lead to morally positive outcomes by fostering fairness, kindness, and social responsibility.

  • Example: Moral Licensing: After behaving in a morally positive way, people may feel entitled to act more selfishly or leniently. However, in some cases, this can also work in the reverse. People who feel the need to compensate for previous bad behavior may engage in moral actions such as charitable giving or helping others.
  • Example: Just-World Hypothesis: The belief that the world is generally fair (even if not always true) can encourage social justice efforts and motivate people to correct perceived injustices. Although this bias can lead to victim-blaming, it can also inspire actions to create fairness in situations where people have suffered.

6. Cultural Continuity and Identity

Cultural biases help maintain traditions, values, and shared beliefs that contribute to cultural identity and continuity. While too much cultural bias can result in ethnocentrism, moderate levels of cultural bias foster pride, solidarity, and preservation of valuable customs.

  • Example: Cultural Bias: The tendency to favor one's own culture or norms can help sustain cultural practices and languages that might otherwise be lost. For communities that have been historically marginalized, cultural bias can serve as a protective mechanism to safeguard their heritage.

7. Pragmatic and Risk-Avoidance Strategies

Certain biases, while not fully rational, can be pragmatic in uncertain situations by helping individuals avoid risks or unnecessary complexities.

  • Example: Status Quo Bias: The tendency to prefer things to remain the same rather than change can be useful when changes carry high uncertainty or risk. In some cases, sticking with familiar options can be safer or more efficient than constantly seeking new solutions.
  • Example: Sunk Cost Fallacy: While the sunk cost fallacy can lead people to continue with a failing endeavor, it can also serve as a commitment mechanism. People may push through difficult periods in long-term projects or relationships because of the emotional or financial investment already made, eventually leading to success through perseverance.

8. Simplification and Cognitive Economy

Biases often allow for cognitive efficiency, enabling people to process large amounts of information without becoming overwhelmed. This mental economy helps conserve cognitive resources for more important tasks.

  • Example: Stereotyping: While stereotyping is often harmful, in some situations, it can help people make quick decisions based on patterns they’ve observed. In complex environments, categorization allows individuals to act without needing exhaustive data for every decision.

9. Learning from Mistakes

Biases can sometimes act as a mechanism for feedback and learning. By recognizing and correcting biased thinking, individuals can develop better decision-making strategies over time.

  • Example: Hindsight Bias: While hindsight bias leads people to think events were predictable after they happen, it also allows them to reflect on past decisions and learn from their mistakes, even if their learning process is imperfect.

10. Encouraging Positive Group Behavior

Group biases can promote social norms and cohesion that lead to prosocial behavior.

  • Example: Authority Bias: The tendency to trust and follow the guidance of authority figures can help maintain order and stability in a society. In a healthy environment, trusting legitimate authorities (e.g., doctors, teachers, leaders) can lead to good decision-making for public health, education, or safety.

Innate biases

Innate biases refer to biases that are thought to be hardwired into human cognition or biologically predisposed. These are tendencies in perception, judgment, and behavior that are present early in life or emerge naturally as part of human cognitive development, rather than being learned from cultural or environmental factors.

Innate biases are natural, biologically-based tendencies that emerge early in life and are often universal across cultures. They likely evolved to help humans respond quickly to environmental threats, form social bonds, and make efficient decisions. While these biases have served essential survival purposes throughout human evolution, they can sometimes lead to errors or irrational judgments in today’s complex world. Understanding these biases helps explain why certain patterns of thinking are so deeply ingrained and hard to overcome.

Such biases likely evolved to help humans survive and navigate complex social and environmental challenges. Below are some key features and examples of innate biases:

Features of Innate Biases:

4. Agency Detection Bias

6. Anchoring Bias

  • Description: People tend to rely too heavily on the first piece of information they encounter (the "anchor") when making decisions, even when that information is arbitrary.

8. Language Preference Bias

Innate Biases and Evolutionary Psychology

Innate biases are closely linked to evolutionary psychology, which suggests that many of these biases developed as survival mechanisms in our ancestors. They allowed early humans to:

  • React quickly to danger.
  • Form strong social bonds and cooperate.
  • Process complex social and environmental information efficiently.

Featuring: Repetition bias

Repetition bias refers to the tendency for people to believe information or claims as true simply because they have been repeated multiple times, regardless of whether the information is accurate or not. This bias exploits a cognitive shortcut in which repeated exposure to a message makes it more familiar, and this familiarity can be mistakenly interpreted as truth or credibility.

Key Characteristics of Repetition Bias:

  1. Familiarity Effect: Repeating information increases familiarity, and familiarity often feels comfortable or trustworthy to the brain. Over time, repeated statements become easier to process (known as processing fluency), leading people to mistakenly assume they are more accurate.
  2. Illusory Truth Effect: This is a psychological phenomenon where repeated exposure to a statement increases the likelihood that it will be perceived as true, even if it's false. The more often we hear a claim, the more likely we are to accept it as true.
  3. Influence of Media and Advertising: Repetition bias is widely used in advertising, media, and propaganda. By continuously repeating slogans, ideas, or claims, advertisers and political campaigns can shape public perceptions and beliefs, even if the underlying information is not accurate.
  4. Social Influence: In social contexts, hearing the same idea repeated by multiple people (or the same person multiple times) can reinforce belief in that idea. The bias can be compounded when individuals hear the same repeated information from different sources, creating a false sense of consensus.

Why Repetition Bias Happens:

  • Cognitive Efficiency: The brain uses shortcuts to make decisions efficiently. If something feels familiar because we've encountered it many times, the brain tends to view it as "safe" or "true" without needing to critically analyze it every time.
  • Memory and Recognition: When we hear something repeatedly, our memory becomes more familiar with it. Familiarity creates a sense of recognition and comfort, leading us to believe that it must be accurate.
  • Reduced Skepticism: As repetition makes ideas more familiar, the brain’s natural skepticism and critical thinking can decrease. Familiar statements are easier to process, making them feel more correct than unfamiliar or complex ideas.

Examples of Repetition Bias:

  1. Political Messaging: Political parties often repeat slogans or messages (e.g., "Make America Great Again") to create strong associations in the minds of voters, making the message feel more credible and influential.
  2. Advertising: Companies use repeated advertisements to ensure that their product names, logos, or slogans stick in consumers' minds, increasing the chances that people will prefer their product simply because it feels familiar.
  3. Misinformation Spread: False information, conspiracy theories, or myths can spread widely through social media, where they are repeated over and over. The sheer repetition of these claims, regardless of their accuracy, can cause people to believe them.

The Impact of Repetition Bias:
