What is it?

An installation on the theme of exclusion.

Why make it?

To express how it feels to be unseen and to raise awareness.

Workflow

Make a smaller black object as well as multiple colorful objects. Place them around the black object in a circle. Record bustling sounds. Place speakers around the circle. Place a strong spotlight above the black object, creating a border around it.

Timetable

A week. Days 1-3: Making the objects. Day 4: Recording the sounds. Day 5: Editing sound and testing speakers. Day 6: Installing the work. Day 7: Finalizing details.

Previous practice

Experience in stage setting, cinematography and direction, image and sound creation and editing.

Relation to a wider context

In a world where health, happiness, young age and wealth are pushed as mandatory, even in seemingly healthy environments exclusion is constantly practiced. We should be aware of our actions or of the pressure we are under, depending on our often unconscious and involuntary role in this dynamic.

Choices made

Color: Black is over-saturated (pun intended) and cliché in its use as a symbol of sadness, loneliness, the Other etc. However, black here is chosen as the absence of color and it serves the dramatic element of the middle piece well. A choice was to make the objects themselves quite crude, no specific details or form, to emphasize their impersonal character, and also to make the object in the middle different in size. Another choice was how to place the objects in relation to each other. They are facing the object in the middle in order to show the element of loneliness even more clearly, as they circle it not in solidarity, but in an interaction that is happening around it without it participating. This will be better shown with the border created by the spotlight.
