Graduation Project Proposal Draft3
Trace, Being, Time and Reality
As the development of my dust project, my growing interest towards time, being and reality leading me to a possible project.
As the development of my dust project, my growing interest towards time, being and reality leading me to a possible project. My graduation work will mainly focus on abstraction video and sound, using both digital and analogue media. By comparing these two media, Searching for new possibilities of expression and researching how micro-perceptions and fragmented memories, constructs individual reality.
My fascination towards film media is especially contact print technique. Mainly because: for me, the out come of the final image of contact print is a result of trance.
after physical tough and lighting process. the trace left behind from small material.
Collecting dust is anther way of collecting my trance in a material sense. any my act on pulling transparent scotch tape and making strips and marks on it.
trace is not only a element of my work also an instrument.
I like this poetic and intimate way of producing images.
I consider trace as a evidence of exist. when the object or figure is absent.
"i am gone. however you can look at the small trace to see that i use to been there." All you see is empty, fragment, ambiguous image, however the sound and continually movement will give a cue of what use to happen at this space. in different time. i am building a dimension beyond the physical world. witch full of fragmented moments and memories. there are no logical time frame and reasonable orientation.
[the project will build on projects of mine that are in progress: + make link to milkshake machine and other projects you have been working on + and projects I completed last year]
Dust machine. (Installation) Existent Absentia. Dust (hair and particles collected from myself.) The trace of being, evidence of existing Existent Absentia. I am not here. But you will know I use to be, because my dust and trace. Project: dust machine. Materiality and screen based image.
Relation to previous practice
steps of my practise:(things i want to do before i made my mind for my graduation project)
When I look back of my original motivation of using dust as a media object to create works. I notice everything start with my moment of experience. “My fascination towards "noise" start with my biking experience in a windy and heavy snowing weather in Rotterdam. Intensive snow flares coming towards my eyes with strong wind. I can't see the road ahead. Everything is white and blurry and flickery. My sense was weakening at that moment. I can hear Traffic is passing by. But I don't know which direction they are heading. Coming towards me or passing away? At that moment I feel like I am in another dimension. I don't know where I am. Where I am heading. I am seeing and hearing intensive information, but somehow I feel lost, experiencing silence and void.”
Sense of lost both Geographically and cultural identity.
Relation to a larger context
The notion of memory dust. how memory filter reality.
BBC documentary about a psychological experiment conducted on human subject. The experts put volunteers into a small enclosure space without any light and object, in order to see how human react to absent enclosure environment. And try to investigate how we defined ourselves, whit out any surroundings. Most of the subject starts to panic when they realize there is nothing surrounding them, no light not event sounds. They start to tap their body in order to making some noise for their existence.
If there is a chair, I am a person. I am the user; I can sit on the chair, or standing on it. The chair has meaning and function because of the user. If I left, the chair will still be a chair. However if all mankind were never exist. Then the chair is not longer a chair. It becomes a useless object. Same logic goes to an individual, if we stripe all the meanings, titles and relations from a person, what will be then?
How to use fake memory produce images:
If I said, there was an apple on the table while we having dinner last night, with absent of camera and documentation. We have to rely on our memories. If I told you that there was an apple on the table while we are having dinner last night. You will try to recall your memory from last night try to look at those images, which stored in your head searching for a image of an apple.
If I don’t know for sure there are an apple on the table while we are having dinner last night, however I repeat to myself, and there will be an image of apple start to shows in my brain. Then, I will describe it to you the details: There was a lovely apple on the table last night when we are having dinner. It is a medium size apple I remember the red color skin of the apple gives out beautiful gentle gloss like pearls under the yellow light from our kitchen.
When I reach that moment, the image start to generate itself inside your head, due to the fact there was no objective documentation of last night’s dinner. All we have is our selective and non-reliable memory. If I start to convince you with details (how it looks and how it smalls) the apple will reveal itself to your memory. How the details of our sensory experience carry out most convincing
We start to search similar experience with an other apple we saw in different period of time and borrow that image and small fit to slot of the imaginative apple I been describe.
I am using this example to indicate how memory works and how it related to image.
Recently I am interested of reading some literary works reflect on the steam of consciousness.
As an image make I immediate sees a way of produce image and sound base work using the structure of the steam of consciousness.
Bend one’ reality through altering memories.
This also could apply to something did present as a fact in the pass, with altering the emotional respond by describe to others again and again.
How it related to larger context:
The power of repetition
How it related to larger context:
If we look around our mediated world, which full of nose and images audiovisual work through repeat the video clips again and again, in order to hepatizing us through suggestion. Or embedded some values and ideologies to our consciousness.
(Examples: food ads (both fast food and biological food) and cosmetics beauty products ads)
Computer games ----- time matters. Ads: repetition matters.
Practical steps
Observe the trace around me, write and draw story board and directional script.
1.trace, figure, remainder, indentation. video with a loose narrative in which you see the trace of the object disappear. ( Cushion blanket, couch, human skin, memory foam, waves and sand) How objects document time. Sound: Minimal - it is what it is just showing time and objects = how time is recorded by objects
2. continue with dust project(focus on unpack it) reveal the material. physical materials/ plants decaying inside the film stock. document the process. ... ...just show more of the process of making and collecting the dust.. show raw material as sculpture installation or display the raw footage of 16mm until it got eaten by projector.
(need to be careful yo deal with analog and digital media at the same time. inspired by analog experimental cinema. however need to think about how to present it in this age. not just repeats the same thing which is already done 60s and 70s.)
