Transmediale - Singularities
Singularities
• Singularities are often used to describe human finitude
• As the curve of change reaches an infinite gradient, reality itself will be brought into question
• Afro-futurist readings of the concept see the bottom of the curve as the point of change as opposed to the peak, the negative spike is an infinite collapse
• This reading of the singularity describes those who are left outside of the event contrasted with those inside
• For example the western industrial revolution is told as a triumph of human technological advancement as opposed to a violent history of slavery
• As the iphone created a techno-sociological change in western culture, the materials needed for its manufacture created a negative spike in areas that could supply it
• To create a human that is contextually aware of the ever-changing subjectivities, where singularities are equal to all others in its finitude
