Michael's notes https://pad.pzimediadesign.nl/p/pts-2017-01-10
Remco did his thesis for his graphic design study on music scores Pushing the Score - not reinvent idea, but see it differently Graphic scores could be visualised as a Jackson Pollock / curly lines, but now there is new media that could represent it differently

Derek (artez) merging sound and image (and publishing) making own instruments concept of oscillators

group publication, not separate, but can look into individual interests restriction: time, money, size

we decide the format

Sculptural Electronic Sound Discs (SESD) (2012) Edition of 10 pieces

http://deplayer.nl/releases/dob-054-057

Tom Verbruggen - beige Gert Jan Prins - green Gijs Giessens - grey piece Dennis de Bel - dome

Piece 1 Dennis de Bel (teacher at WdKA) dome as wave form (sin), record at flat part of ‘half-globe’, needle needs to be inverted to play ‘upside down’ sculptural object

Piece 2 Tom Verbruggen

Piece 3 Gijs Giessens sound of the grooves

Piece 4 Gert Jan Prins groves that play one thing, transmitter in the middle that picks up local radio track becomes a mix of the two record not just to play, but with certain possibilities (installation piece)
All pieces 1-4 come together in a wooden cabinet, including booklet with info about each piece, printed on riso, designed by each artist, partly documentation, partly instructions for performance

record suitcase art on front and back-side of each record - stuck on rubber gloves, medals, glitter

Tetra Gamma Circulaire Edition of 20 pieces solar cells connected to box with speakers. can connect with different devices

language, cultural diversity dance - rhythm
George Brecht - Fluxus event course how would a group of dancers read poster scores? notation system for choreographers transformation of information - how would musicians play choreography scores? execution is a part of it - does it stay as an object, does the viewer get involved and execute it themselves? challenges the person, so not just consumption piece, but needs to act with it
we don’t have to be musicians. there is a difference between sound and music
Accents: Laurence Abu Amdam (Lebanese)

Send article to Frank: goose bumps when listening to music (the drop) Language and accents, but also interested how the sound of war developed (drones) Article / video: small boy happy when it’s cloudy because drones do not fly

Next steps:
Dance (idea: an occasion to finally film all dance routines with Sean) Can we dance certain routines to different music styles / counts? Waltz at a 4 (not 3) count. Join Swing Basics / Charleston Green classes Read into notation systems for choreographers - what are they? will they be easy for me? can I read them without instructions? (idea: note down dance instructions. differentiate right / left foot by colour - right=blue, left=red) (idea: make rules to interpret score as a dance/choreography) (idea: let dice decide next move in jive. American Spin=2, Spanish Arms=3, Windmill=4) - viewer could get involved by throwing dice, but performance cannot be archived / recreated (idea: how could it be connected to twister? - chance dedicates colour / movement) Some artist bought too many samples for the company to handle. This raises the question of whether the system needs upgrading. What questions does dance raise? Tango has storyline, Jive has African slave history (look into dance video) Look into history of different dances "The best way to predict the future is to invent it" - Alan Kay (1971) How could we predict the future using dance? Take possible news and correlate them to dice (chance) which is correlated to dance moves Take dance moves that are correlated to dice (chance) and correlate them with possible news Michiel Schuurman - new form of harmony using glitch Translating one type of content to another (python!) analog to digital Look into Alan Kay

Language Ask about artist (white record sleeve with black scattered letters on the wall) Find Letter from Santa Play around with Google Translate and speaking in different languages look into old project ideas: false auto correct in different languages?
tuning - detuning / noting - denoting
Remo design studio in Ams'dam works for cultural clients - Witte de Wit broad works: books, video, websites started Onomatopoei in Eindhoven (works with Freek and Coos)
graduation project (2002) - mobile home recording studio thesis: possible relation between music and graphic design
Dick Baltan - natlab (Eindhoven) philips recording studios vs. Wim Crouwel
allow chance to open up the process (dice experiment: make a book, pick size, type, colours depending on chance) Remco can't read notes, but visually they are intriguing (visuals by John Cage) what's the structure / system prepared piano John Cage (screws / bolts in piano) to change sound what are your tools to hack? how do you systemise that? Daniel Maarleveld - hacks pen plotters John Cage visualised time based intervals Carl Nawrot - Werkplaats Typografie - moulds to make shapes in his masters Fluxes Word Event Roel, Juna, Jonathan - Conditional Design rules (workshops) Studio Moniker https://workbook.conditionaldesign.org
Karel Martens - structures and minimal music Steve Reich - Pendulum Music (1968) Karel Martens - graphics - shifting in patterns / layering / mixing of colours Markus Popp - Oval (static music) same destruction as pen plotters / piano / glitch Michiel Schuurman - (works at Flisco fabric) makes silk prints - new form of harmony using glitch Metahaven - Black Midi - Japanese game community with cheesy music, merging millions of game notes (trying to push as many notes together - written notes cause the page to turn black)

For next week: Make prototypes of ideas Think about individual ideas Think how all projects will come together
Next week session: editorial meeting Where are we going with this publication? What do we need to produce it? Where can we get the materials? Think about distribution model

Contributions from others
Vinyl as publication Difficult format for design / print Publications: records, art on sleeve, square book explaining what they are doing “Wie schrijft, die blijft"

BIGMAG 1 Jim … from The Homosexuals - black yodeller truck driver in Texas distributed his cassettes in gas stations in Texas
Jessica Rylan - makes own electronic circuits (modular) to make instruments mandala-like etching in master on back of vinyl (idea: zoetrope) repetitive yet not in rhythm - 2 repetitive rhythms layered, sometimes overlap? visualise sound waves of different lapses continues layering new rhythms but also unexpected tapping, scratches, breaking when focusing on soft monotone background rhythm, you could fall into a trance when focusing on unexpected noises, you no longer hear the background rhythm (idea: representing falling into a trance)
NOTE: workflow from ISH was to jot down as many project ideas whilst being introduced to new brief (expand that to jotting down project and further reading / topics)
What was easier / harder than expected, both content and physically? 500 copies is a lot to make, bind, glue by hand distribution is difficult - finding people who are interested in the product / reaching out who is good to distribute with in America? Nest issue printed 300 copies Didn’t manage to print 4 issues a year, just 1 Just let it happen - gives many surprises and disappointments Focus more on content

BIGMAG 2 (2010) Added film script of a movie that wasn’t filmed by Gabor Artojiai (?) from Hungary Politically difficult subject. Found love letters in archive in Budapest between Leverie Staal and Basalsz Wrote a ‘mystery’ about their story Script was there, they created an audio track with Gabor Artojiai as a premiere for the Film Festival
Eric Newton just listened to the soundtrack, in a cinematographic setting Part 1: See me (object based) Part 2: Hear me (people based) (idea: close eyes, imagine storyline - exercises for kids) train or kettle? (idea: het geluid) motor, buttons, different speeds - rewinding of a video tape!
John Perry first split sounds of a child about to say something? breaths in Man saying (football?) scores 104212121110 (idea: Japaanse Puzzle)
Unknown artist, can’t trace woman back - track bought on the streets of Baltimore African-American reciting (self-written?) poetry about difficulty in society
Drunk man tries to explain something gibberish about thunderstorms and a plane filled with clay - is it acted? soundtracks added in the background for sound effects (idea: how many times do people say ‘like’ when they talk?) (idea: take audio from video of Tim doing math in McDonalds when drunk)

BIGMAG 5 former had photography and articles, but this one was more abstract - riso printed graphics see it as an architectural thing - mix of media. Asked artists to design the series
ETNO as start Lebanese artist Norah McGee emailing each other tracks from kitchen appliances - created a track of their ‘conversation’ son of …? African-based music from a unique african xylophone, but made digitally. Sounded a little like a fail, like he was retuning
Michael … recordings of Biranja language of Indian’s that travelled to Suriname to work (1988) songs told stories of homeland but also about moral issues / life Songs were later translated (text). This language was chosen because it is dying, due to migration / fusion with Surinamese (idea: how can language shape culture?) (idea: force google translate speak text from one language written phonetically in another - Message from Santa) (idea: look into Polish language surviving thanks to sung / spoken prose / poetry - check artists that parents listened to) (idea: why / how does rhythm force us to move? Gaudi’s work forced people to interact with it - staircase) (idea: look into experience of Sri Lankan youth playing drums and singing in train from Ella to Kandy. First traditional, later interacted with tourists and played commonly known melodies - Justin Bieber)
Made smaller records too (not just BIGMAG) with artists who lated could curate their show 8” series
Side note: Records came in different sizes 3” records used for Spreekpoppen (speaking dolls from East Germany) They could say ‘hello’ (idea: or they could sound demonic)
8” Transparent square record in perspex demonic sounds layered on drum rhythms and random sounds (Michael joked about Shazaming it) (idea: everything is a remix. what if you shazam songs that play only music, without the lyrics that make it clear it’s a remix. How many versions can it find? example of dad learning to use shazam)
NOTE: workflow / pieces from ISH: show one thing, mean another - show contrast / make people think, make people slightly uncomfortable
Made opera Cover made from wooden planks spinning wheel in the cover that shows story / animation
Ergo Vismis - wrote operas Pop up book from record cover
Special edition 10” series
(Look more into 33 / 45 rpm)
Danny de Vos - Sound as a Weapon laser print in perspex 'pop photo’ poster included with the record
Erik van Lieshout - EPMD (Erik en Peter Maken Dollars) Mark Bain - extracts sounds from buildings and makes them hearable Tower 1 & Tower 2 - sounds recorder from New Jersey and New England of the attack on WTC towers (2 impacts and 2 collapses 2.4 on Richter scale)
there are record collectors and art collectors - there isn’t anything in-between. why not?
Leif (Elvin?) Lewin - sound reproduction 2 moulds and poured in liquid to create record Image / etching of Jesus face is still carved in a spiral Original Jesus face was carved in 1649 Track is the recording of touching the copper plate of the face (idea: look into photo of female body covered with Brail)
Jan Konings (Droog Design) he looks into society and frictions project about sound in public space as an irritating factor. people try to diminish sound why not use sound as a architectural potential? why not have a street where it always plays rave music? It’s a very western problem. In China it’s always busy and noisy. What is noise? Sound vs. noise vs. chaos
Makes ‘silent’ frequencies audible - still Jan?
Jan…(same Jan?) repaired destroyed Kutchwiet recordings on wax
Sieg
Marco Fusinato - Black Mass Implosion (absolute chaos) Played at the Groot Handels Gebouw during working hours (on a Saturday). Windows were covered by newspaper how did people not go crazy? He is also a graphic designer - this abrupt style is seen there too. His work is also political (find article / interview about him by Brandon W. Joseph - MIT press)
Language and sounds William Burroughs look into DADA sound look into white cover with scattered letters (on the wall) (idea: Tim trying to speak Polish by glueing continents / sounds together
