Piece 4 Gert Jan Prins groves that play one thing, transmitter in the middle that picks up local radio track becomes a mix of the two record not just to play, but with certain possibilities (installation piece)
All pieces 1-4 come together in a wooden cabinet, including booklet with info about each piece, printed on riso, designed by each artist, partly documentation, partly instructions for performance

language, cultural diversity dance - rhythm
George Brecht - Fluxus event course how would a group of dancers read poster scores? notation system for choreographers transformation of information - how would musicians play choreography scores? execution is a part of it - does it stay as an object, does the viewer get involved and execute it themselves? challenges the person, so not just consumption piece, but needs to act with it
we don’t have to be musicians. there is a difference between sound and music

Dance (idea: an occasion to finally film all dance routines with Sean) Can we dance certain routines to different music styles / counts? Waltz at a 4 (not 3) count. Join Swing Basics / Charleston Green classes Read into notation systems for choreographers - what are they? will they be easy for me? can I read them without instructions? (idea: note down dance instructions. differentiate right / left foot by colour - right=blue, left=red) (idea: make rules to interpret score as a dance/choreography) (idea: let dice decide next move in jive. American Spin=2, Spanish Arms=3, Windmill=4) - viewer could get involved by throwing dice, but performance cannot be archived / recreated (idea: how could it be connected to twister? - chance dedicates colour / movement) Some artist bought too many samples for the company to handle. This raises the question of whether the system needs upgrading. What questions does dance raise? Jessica Rylan - makes own electronic circuits (modular) to make instruments mandala-like etching in master on back of vinyl (idea: zoetrope) repetitive yet not in rhythm - 2 repetitive rhythms layered, sometimes overlap? visualise sound waves of different lapses continues layering new rhythms but also unexpected tapping, scratches, breaking when focusing on soft monotone background rhythm, you could fall into a trance when focusing on unexpected noises, you no longer hear the background rhythm (idea: representing falling into a trance)
NOTE: workflow from ISH was to jot down as many project ideas whilst being introduced to new brief (expand that to jotting down project and further reading / topics)
What was easier / harder than expected, both content and physically? 500 copies is a lot to make, bind, glue by hand distribution is difficult - finding people who are interested in the product / reaching out who is good to distribute with in America? Nest issue printed 300 copies Didn’t manage to print 4 issues a year, just 1 Just let it happen - gives many surprises and disappointments Focus more on content

BIGMAG 2 (2010) Added film script of a movie that wasn’t filmed by Gabor Artojiai (?) from Hungary Politically difficult subject. Found love letters in archive in Budapest between Leverie Staal and Basalsz Wrote a ‘mystery’ about their story Script was there, they created an audio track with Gabor Artojiai as a premiere for the Film Festival
Eric Newton just listened to the soundtrack, in a cinematographic setting Part 1: See me (object based) Part 2: Hear me (people based) (idea: close eyes, imagine storyline - exercises for kids) train or kettle? (idea: het geluid) motor, buttons, different speeds - rewinding of a video tape!

BIGMAG 5 former had photography and articles, but this one was more abstract - riso printed graphics see it as an architectural thing - mix of media. Asked artists to design the series
ETNO as start Lebanese artist Norah McGee emailing each other tracks from kitchen appliances - created a track of their ‘conversation’ son of …? African-based music from a unique african xylophone, but made digitally. Sounded a little like a fail, like he was retuning
Michael … recordings of Biranja language of Indian’s that travelled to Suriname to work (1988) songs told stories of homeland but also about moral issues / life Songs were later translated (text). This language was chosen because it is dying, due to migration / fusion with Surinamese (idea: how can language shape culture?) (idea: force google translate speak text from one language written phonetically in another - Message from Santa) (idea: look into Polish language surviving thanks to sung / spoken prose / poetry - check artists that parents listened to) (idea: why / how does rhythm force us to move? Gaudi’s work forced people to interact with it - staircase) (idea: look into experience of Sri Lankan youth playing drums and singing in train from Ella to Kandy. First traditional, later interacted with tourists and played commonly known melodies - Justin Bieber)
Made smaller records too (not just BIGMAG) with artists who lated could curate their show 8” series
Side note: Records came in different sizes 3” records used for Spreekpoppen (speaking dolls from East Germany) They could say ‘hello’ (idea: or they could sound demonic)
8” Transparent square record in perspex demonic sounds layered on drum rhythms and random sounds (Michael joked about Shazaming it) (idea: everything is a remix. what if you shazam songs that play only music, without the lyrics that make it clear it’s a remix. How many versions can it find? example of dad learning to use shazam)
NOTE: workflow / pieces from ISH: show one thing, mean another - show contrast / make people think, make people slightly uncomfortable

Jan Konings (Droog Design) he looks into society and frictions project about sound in public space as an irritating factor. people try to diminish sound why not use sound as a architectural potential? why not have a street where it always plays rave music? It’s a very western problem. In China it’s always busy and noisy. What is noise? Sound vs. noise vs. chaos

He is also a graphic designer - this abrupt style is seen there too. His work is also political (find article / interview about him by Brandon W. Joseph - MIT press)
