Encoding Reality
Creator Ryan Cherewaty
Year 2018

The development of technological tools has evolved to extend the sensory capabilities of our nervous systems with the drive to glean meaning and significance from the world we inhabit. These are the central interface in the digitally enabled world for the encoding of symbols into culture. Cybernetic technology operating in synchrony with our nervous systems is the alternative life for a disoriented humanity, electronics stretching the nervous system into environment.

The friction between these worlds is the cause of dislocation from corporeality, causing a critical rupture in the link between body, mind and environment. Encoding Reality is a series of films that investigates these relationships. In Deaths Dream presents non-human beings as they attempt to understand the relevance of the human condition through magick ritual, performance and remnants of emotional bondage that float throughout the data clouds. This being ultimately questions whether our consciousness can mesh with the machinic.

Involuntary Parks presents a speculative future landscape after we have disappeared and left only our gods behind.

Bio Ryan Cherewaty is a media artist from Toronto. His work explores the post-human experience within the networked condition – where the technology of ubiquitous computing and interconnectedness are addressed as inherent concepts of reality and looks to the future of meshing ourselves with non-human intelligences. And, how the core aspects of humanity - emotions, impulses and behaviour are affected by these systems. Having spent a number of years in the visual effects industry, techniques utilized in this field are the central component of Ryan’s work.

His work has been shown in locations such as Amsterdam, Paris, London and Toronto.
