Week 2

16/04/24 Monday

Meeting at 10:00 at the Zuidplein Public Library (Schmidtplein 11)

Alex Zakkas is joining us.

The contemporary city is the setting for plenty of observations made by many different actors. A few observers at work, right now:

  • Plastic tube pressure sensor on cycling path to count bikes,
  • Pigeon waiting for crumbs to fall from a kebab,
  • Intrusion-detection lamp post in lombardijen security fieldlab,
  • Self-scanning cassa at AH,
  • Water quality sensor in the canal.

In this session we will join the ranks of the street observers, a role that against common sense, it does not result in a distance from what is observed. This activity can changes one's mode of relation to its environment, bringing them to notice patterns of passerbys and of the other observers in place, suggesting the conditions to interact.

T A G S

Walking throught the streets of Rotterdam, you can spot graffities and smaller tags along your way. Depeding on the area you're observing, it can be more or less hard to spot since a lot of houses are cleaned on a regular basis. Often you can see a light shadow remaining on the wall, creating a new piece.

Handwriting is very individual and each group creates it's own name and tag. Without being part of the scene, it can be very hard to read them or to understand der full meaning. In the following are three informational layers:

1. An image of the tag.

2. The first part of the text was created by my phone. In some cases the programm recognizes text in these images, but in very rare cases it is able to translate it correctly.

3. In brakets you can read my attempt to translate the image.

It is interesting to see that numbers and in one example the cyrillic alphabet are very well recognized. In other cases it translates letters into numbers or even thinks it is the norvegian currency (2NOK).

The route has been calculated

On may way from the library at Zuidplein to school, I tried to keep track of the different directions I took. When reading the commands out loud a very specific rhythm is created with it's own performative character.

The route was calculated
