Central to my research is the re-telling of history, moving away from a linear, objective and singular grand narrative. With my thesis I am reflecting and re-counting the socio-economic development and colonial expansion of The Netherlands and the continued repercussion thereof through its relation to water. Braiding together two strands; one consisting of critical essays that take a geographical location in Rotterdam as its point of departure for wider discussions, the other takes the form of a speculative fiction from the perspective of the sea. (I am considering to add a 3rd strand consisting of more personal diary inputs, reflections on artworks / readings or interview transcripts). This research functions as the point of departure for the website, digital environment I am building as the graduation project.

"histories are made by irreversible events; by mapping these events and remapping their politics, social structures can, perhaps, evolve to accommodate, both alternative pasts and radical futures." (Jaojoco 2020, p. 16)

The demolition of the Tweebobsuurt, like many urban restructuring projects, is a literal top-down, imperial way of building a world. The existing life and architecture is forcibly erased, evicted. Translated into blank slates, to be built upon in the name of modernist progress
