My interpretation:
The video had a somewhat abstract feeling to it. In it I could recognize the different stages of flowers. The blooming of it. For me it represented change, change in life (life cycle) and movement.
What?
She created this project as an assignment on time and how you perceive time. In this particular project she focused on internal time. The project had different forms of internal time. She created a calm part and a fast paste part. These different time pastes stood for different emotions. These emotions were: an upset feeling and a calm feeling. She explained “When the feeling was upset the time went fast. And she connected the feeling of upset also to living in the past. The feeling of calmness was connected to the present. When you feel calm, you live in the present and the time goes slower.”
How?
She bought some tulips. And every tulip went through a different process. She used artificial processes and natural processes. She fried the first tulip. And she made a stop-motion about the process of opening the leaves. She boiled the second flower and the third flower was put in a vase to bloom naturally. After capturing these different ways of blooming (naturally and artificially) She put it in Photoshop and color graded the images. She put some of the flowers in After Effects and she edited the remaining images on iMovie with double exposer/expositor. Most of the footage that she shot was edited on Photoshop.
In this process it took her more time to edit the artificially bloomed flower images than the natural bloomed flower images. The reason for this was that she shot more images of the artificial bloomed flowers than the natural bloomed flowers.
She also created the music in the video herself. She did not have a lot of experience in it, but was very interested in the process. For this editing process she used the Ableton software and she experimented with synthesizer to find out witch notes she should use.
Why?
At first she had struggles with the assignment. And after seeing flowers in her environment she found that flowers had a very clear timeline and structure. She quoted “It was clear to me that the flower was a beautiful way to capture time.”
In her thinking process she could not think of any medium to visualize it. She quoted “It all felt like a spiral to me”. In the mean time she learned a lot about stage light and she might wanted to use that. On the other hand she did not want to overcomplicate the project.
After seeing a music video in school, all made out of stop-motion, she got inspired to use stop-motion in her own project.
In her process she shared that she boils and fry’s the flowers. She decided to use these artificial blooming methods to amplify the emotions she mentions in the art project.
Choise in Music?
She made different choices in her art project. Her music choice is inspired by the music of Nicholas Jar. He makes interesting music/soundscape. The music has different textures to it. She makes the texture hearable. Making more sound music. She uses the basics to create her music.
What came before?
Before this project she created more abstract projects. She likes to connect it to the music.
What will follow?
There is a relation with what she is doing right now. It is about internal struggles and subconsciousness. She likes to focus it on time and the effect of it. This in combination with animation and music.

“What would I change?”
She would change the proportions in the video. She would change the aspect rations. Furthermore, she also didn't know that the frame had a bigger outline. And make it a bit more clean.

She finds this a heart question. One thing is that it does not have a clear narrative and not easy to understand.

She chose a book. One that reads fast and another one that reads slow. The fast one might be less boring and more fun and slow might be more pages and difficult to read.

My interpretation:
The three scratch images were filled with the unknown. It tickles my curiosity. By removing the first layer you discover the images behind it, but you will never be able to bring the first layer back as it was. It has a type of playfulness to it too.
What?
The project is an experiment. Something she wanted to try for a long time. Since she came here, she almost forgot her texturizing side with art. And it also fits to her research. The project is related to the unspeakable, the unknown. And it can be plenty of things. This is an experimental approach and a work in progress. It is about discovering new things.
How?
She thought of this idea when she had the portrait assignment. The image is from her classmate, and it is abastract. She wanted to give it to her classmate and let her write on it. So that the classmate would not know what it is, but it would add an extra layer to the project. An example would be she creating a childhood image and her classmate writing on the photo about her childhood. So the project is about discovering an unknown image and invite others to interact with this mysterious project.
She also discussed the making of the project. She quoted, "You have to print the picture on a thicker type of paper, and you have to cover the image with a greasy layer. I used butter and chalk on top of it. The butter allows the chalk to be glued to the photo. And then another layer of painting is separated of the lay of chalk. So, it is three layers and the photo."
In this project, she was very interested in the textual aspect.
Why?
This textual piece is part of the research for the Eye project. The project makes sense to her, and she has done this before. And right now, this art piece fits to her research, and she feels a connection to the content. It is a rediscovery technique and playful technique. It is also very stable between the conceptional and the technique.
Would you use this for the Eye project?
She would not use this in this exact way for the Eye project. She queted "I do think that my research is about the things that you can see and what you cannot see. There is world of possibilities with so many different subjects. It is a different approach of the same concept. It has a connection with the unconscious mind and discover yourself and the unknown you.
Choices?
For this art piece, she experimented, and she wants to do this more. Change the color underneath and see what the possibilities are for this. Because this is an experiment she decided to choose simple ways. She was more focust on if it was working than how it would look when it works.
What came before?
In a broader sence. She has always been more interesting in the abstraction and the materials. She has always been working with wood, painting and really interested in materials. And things that are not presented realistically. She was painting the last year connects to this project. She was painting landscapes but it was not equal to the realistic view. More realisticly is the video she made with Yalou about the unknown, unspeakable.
What will follow?
So this afternoon she will be working on this. And she attends to apply these techniques for Cihads project. And she wants to connect it to another project that she created in the past. And hopefully she will find some interesting results.

How does it change?
She thinks that this could be an open work. So what she likes about the last layer, that it could be anything. I t could change completely the meaning of the piece itself. Or it could add other images. It is a very open piece but change the meaning of the photo.
How could it be translated?
For the video, for example. She is thinking in formal aspects. She has been experimenting in video. How can she work with audio and video? When you see the video, you see the image and the voice, but what if we disconnect this. It could be translated this way.

The process is very introvert. Because it is about discovering things innerly. And the outcome is extraverted.

YALOU'S piece
what? Ieva says it is a child in an art class painting a tiger, the facts. It is rough footage. This project is for te Eye, about her curiosity about God and religion, and she thought that the God was the sun. She is interested in how children how humanised God. (Ieva) when you see children is kind a feeling of innocence, and specially with the children drawing and painting it is very pure and raw, they don't have the anxiety, they are not overthinking, so it is very beautiful and it works thinking about God. With adults you feel that they are defending what they think, and with children there is no violence in there, just honesty, they give everything.
how? She really wants to experience religion, there are a lot of negative opinions in religion and there is a big truth about that, she thinks you cannot judge religion if you didn't try the religion. You cannot say anything related with the "J" or goodness. (I) are they very religious? they do have an organ, but they are very open, so the younger child is 4 years old, but her mother says that it is ok if he is not believing in God. She went there on Thursday (this church), she shows us the music performing in the church (pop music). No one really talks about it but the christian church is trying to connect the youth to make it live. The kids in the video says for example "tits" or "vagina". She met other families who believe in God and they even asked if she wanted to be baptised. (I) SO do you want to be religious or you just want to see how people live with religioun? She needs to really experience to truly understand it, so in journalism she thinks that they don't do it at all, but you have to open it up to understand it. She is open to do that, she is trying to experience religion without any judgment. (I) How do you find these families? Is the sister in law (her brother's girlfriend). She has always been judging religion and she feels religion only can be judged if you experience it. Talking about the Bible and New Testament, who wrote it? Ieva is angry about it. (I) Do you live with them? No, just they text me when they are going to church.
Choices? Not to put their faces in the footage, it was about their story, she wanted to focus on the creation and how they see God, not on their faces.
What came before? A discussion with her mum about religion. She was telling her experience with religion, and her boyfriend too (he is catholic, and she is not religious).
What will follow? A personal journey with religion, she is not going to stop to stop with this project. Not stop with this experience, it also feels unfair, as it is a very personal passion of her, that she should give time to grow and shape.
Introvert-extrovert? So, as a introvert-extrovert, I dove in an extrovert religion focusing on two extrovert Childs with an introvert mother.
What does it change? It changes my vision on religion and it adds something to the people saying this video.
What are its limits? It has millions of limits, definitely how people would interpret it and she doesn't care about, so it is about the receiver so it is very possible that it doesn't fit into their likeness.
IEVA'S ANNOTATIONS FOR YALOU
what?
This project is for the eye and it is about my curiosity towards religion and god and it all started with me as a child i thought that the sun was a god and I was curious what christian children would connect god with and how they would humanize and interact with him. What would it be if I had adults sitting there, with adults they are very defensive and children just say what they think, without defending anything and just share their opinion on thoughts and there's no violence in there, honesty is something very attractive about children and that was a big part of the project.
how?
I really wanted to experience religion for myself, as in my surroundings there is many negative opinions about god and how it influences our society and there is a big truth about that but i think you cant judge a religion idf you haven't experienced it. I am going to church and reading the bible and living with a religion. The family is a very open chirstian family and the youngest is 4 years old, they know I do not come from a religious family yet they are still very respective. There are many Christian communities in the Netherlands, who are open for contemporary thinking and want to open their doors to and attract younger people. I've been with one family and met 3 other families.
My brothers girlfriend's sister is the family I have been living with, and the other families I met in church. They text me when they go to church or when it is possible for me to come over.
why?
I need to really experience the life and the way and the rules of the topic I'm exploring, that's the only way to get to know a life. If you do not do that, that's how things are misunderstood, you have to open yourself to it, to understand it. For now it's just to experience it first hand without any judgement. You can only judge a religion if you have experiences religion in your own way, I have been judging it as a bad thing, previously, without fully knowing what it was.
choices?
One of the main choices is not putting their face clearly in it even though the participants did not mind showing their face, but it was about their story and creation of the drawing, putting their faces in would distract from the story and I really wanted to focus on the creation and how they see god, so limiting the showing of faces was a conscious decision.
what came before?
It was a discussion with my mom about religion. She was telling her experience with religion and her boyfriend too, he's catholic. Then I came up with the fact that I always felt a connection with the church, nuns and the bible. I wanted to read the bible since I was a teenager and that's how I decided to do my project on the topic of religion.
what will follow?
A personal journey with religion. I think I will not stop after I finish this project, I think it is good for me to experience more and maybe even take it with me to the next project. It feels unfair to stop, as a it is a very personal project of mine and I should give it time to grow and shape.
