NOTE: I included all my ideas and past projects. With time I will eliminate most of the unnecessary elements and keep only the essential.

What do you want to make?

I would like to propose a representation of a cybernetic laboratory which explores possible intelligent future life forms and cybernetic systems. The project is a representation of a chimeric laboratory. It explores possible intelligent future life forms and cybernetic systems in a symbolic and conceptual way. The embassy lies on relation between evolution, cybernetics, homeostasis and general system theory. The artist attempts to create artificial life forms and environments that can learn and adapt to the natural habitat without invading it. The research explores the creation of individual self-organizing intelligences, merging them into a decentralized homeostatic network, where they can learn, evolve and interact with each other and the environment. The adaptation of the synthetic organisms inside natural habitat is an urge in the evolution and an urgency to maintain the stability of homeostasis of heterogeneous micro and macro systems on our planet. The aim of the project is to explore relations between those systems and define new possibilities of artificial cybernetic entities.

How do you plan to make it?

The laboratory includes fragments of the research, sketches, prototypes and the final installation. It incorporates an interactive audio-visual installation including projections made with deep learning, projections on TV light diffusers, digital prints, small light sculptures and soundscape. It is a collection of experiments made with miscellaneous media; it includes experimentation with light, translucent objects, water, network structures, multimedia apparatus, sensors and sound. The artwork is an alive organism made of smaller systems that are adapting to each other and to the unknown environment, expressing and manifesting itself with projected moving images, lights, sensors, transparent objects and sound. The audience become a part of the evolution when entering inside the new artificial universe; the process of metamorphosis works in both ways, influencing the mind state of the visitors and the behavior of the systems. Digital prints are first plans of the study representing sketches of the organisms. The images are synthetic translucent materials captured with slit-scan and analog photography. Small light sculptures represent the ‘In vitro’ collection of translucent synthetic materials, lights and glass containers of different shapes. The work recreates cellular tissues. Projections on TV light diffusers are drawing examples organisms in their first state of life as creatures. The videos were made by filming translucent objects in aquarium using different types of lights. The interactive audio visual installation is a spider web like structure made with black elastic ropes. It expands from the sealing to the floor and nearby walls. White veil is wrapped inside the structure to create bended screens for the projection mapping. The screen lets the light through, achieving a holographic effect. The projected videos are made with deep learning. The software is fed with still images taken from the footage filmed previously by the artist. Those projections represent the self-organizing centers of intelligence, an exchange of information and actions between the software and the artist. Inside the network are placed small cameras, which record the face of spectators, adding another layer to surface of the video. The structure of ropes is video mapped too; the light flashes are travelling from one center to another and symbolizes the signals of the neural network. The installation is producing sound as an attempt of a communication with the human species. The samples are recorded in the urban environment and are given to the network as an example of the outside world. The network tries to transmit to the audience the sound produced in their human habitats in its own interpretation of language. Sound springs out from the connections in modular synthesis and creates a sonic ecosystem.

What is your timetable?

I have already build a small prototype of the installation to study its shape and experimented with most of the media.

Why do you want to make it?

The development of a personal encrypted language of an abstract figuration has an emphasis on cybernetic systems, general systems theory and homeostasis. It explores the network of self-organizing centers of intelligences in micro and macro spheres. Each entity in natural system has the ability to evolve, adapt and take actions by using the language of feedback system. The artistic investigation is based on the discovery of new possibilities and relations between artificial/digital world and natural systems and it leads to an expansion of our understandings of complex macrocosmic structures. The application of the homeostatic practices to artificial cybernetic system makes it able to adapt inside a natural habitat and it draws new perspectives of progressive alienated forms inside complex possible future life structures.

Relation to previous practice

The proposed project is a continuation of my previous research. I have been always interested into discovering imperceptible sides of objects, capturing them with different kinds of media. The scientific side. My past work relates to the exploration of new possibilities of life and environment. I was attempting to create artificial world through different media. My research in Text of method about the cybernetics, system theory and homeostasis fits perfectly in the concept. My research is a continuous exploration of imperceptible micro and macro dimensions; an experimentation with transparent objects, light, water and sound through analog and digital medias. I observe the behaving of the same object through different techniques. At the beginning of the year I started to work with slit-scan where I tried out many different kinds of paper, plastic bags or wrappers. I used the same objects to make a series of photograms. I put plastic layers in an aquarium full of water to see how the water can create a shape and movement and filmed it. I tried out different kinds of light to reach the right consistence and impression to transform floating objects in organic forms. I played with the mirroring in the water and frame rates. In meanwhile I also made a DIY focal camera with a microscope lens and shoot a series of micro landscapes. With these I want to make a scientific photobook with data and calculations that seems to be from another civilization or time, an encrypted language that no one can read. At the end I will create a soundscape using modified samples from field recording for every landscape. The spectator will be able to access to the soundscapes on my webpage through a QR code. Relation to a larger context

Many artists, philosophers and scientists have been questioning the phenomena of light and sound. Can they be produced from a single source? The ancient philosophy explained the equivalence of colors, shapes and sounds through cosmologies, defining numerical relationships as their common point of reference. The experiments with sound-image analogies brought all kinds of apparatus. Carsten Nicolai is creating his own visual and sonic vocabulary at the junctions of the art, natural science and technology. The scientific method and aesthetic practice meet at the level of experiment. He reassembles the alchemist who is intrigued by the aggregate conditions of different materials, their transformations and their mathematical orders, investigating microscopic structures and their macroscopic equivalents to synchronize light and sound and formulate a relationship between seeing and hearing in new ways. (Carsten, 2013, p.11-12). ‘’It is not the encounter of two essentially disparate elements that here provokes the strongest poetic impact; it is the worktable itself, the laboratory in which the artist reconfigures the elements’’. (Carsten, 2013, p.12). Carsten claims that our five senses are a coincidence in our evolution. In his work he transfers the inner synesthetic experience from an organic space of human brain to the external, inorganic working of machines. Experimental prototypes that permit complex perception through latest technology (Carsten, 2013, p.33-34).
