DONE aaaaaahhhhh did any other payments go through to old site? is there an order number bigger than 5241? a quote bigger than #67?
A designer is a person who copies SPF records from cloudflare to the new hosting provider. A designer is someone who talks to a professional on web chat. A designer is someone who drinks coffee in the morning and ginger tea in the evening. Designers wear matching socks. Designer's earphones run out of battery. Designers eat cheese and tiny cucumbers.
Sure design is amateurised but so is everything else and are designers being amateurs any different from amateurs being designers?
the web chat
I have no idea how to transfer DNS records. I've done it maybe twenty times and one time it didnt work and I dont understand it and it freaks me out. In this situation there is a domain passing through CloudFlare to a website hosted with a small company called ******* who arent very good (their server is too slow and gives lots of errors), to Google emails who arent very good (they are a major corporation with too much power), and an invoicing software company **** who are fine. The hosting company are being removed from the party and replaced by a bigger, cheaper, more reliable organisation.
I go onto the website of the new hosting provider and log in as the owner of the website and domain, the end client. They are also a client of the hosting provider so I log into their account like a ghost. Our shared client is called Steve. This is jarring for me as Stephen. The whole experience is about names, canonical, aliases, usernames. I log in as Steve and navigate to the support page, that is what I need. I begin to talk to the web chat representative.

Im trying to point my domain to **hostingprovider** nameservers from an existing website and would like a little help to make sure i get it right please :) Steve ****: This question is related to website: ********** Customer Experience Specialist: Hi Steve! Customer Experience Specialist: Welcome to our live chat Customer Experience Specialist: Hope you're doing well todaty Steve ****: Hey ******, Im good hope you are too Customer Experience Specialist: I'm good, thanks! Customer Experience Specialist: How can I help you? Steve ****: Im transferring a site to **hostingprovider**, I migrated it to a test server and am happy with the setup, and ready to point the nameservers I think. I'm currently using cloudflare and wondering should I keep doing that? Steve ****: I also have email with google, so dont want to interfere with that Customer Experience Specialist: Let me check the domain quickly, I will be right back! Steve ****: thank you Customer Experience Specialist: Thanks for waiting, Steve! I see that the domain is pointed to Cloudflare's nameservers, and I would recommend pointing it to our nameservers directly, which will allow managing the DNS Zone of the domain here, and enabling our CDN service, which has been developed specifically for the websites hosted on our servers Customer Experience Specialist: Before changing the nameservers, you can follow the steps in this article to add Google's MX, SPF and DKIM records in our DNS Zone, to avoid a downtime in the email service Customer Experience Specialist: https://eu.**hostingprovider**.com/kb/how_to_modify_your_mx_records_for_google_apps_mail__gmail/ Steve ****: ok thanks ill follow those instructions Steve ****: and how do i enable the **hostingprovider** cdn? Customer Experience Specialist: Perfect, Steve! After pointing the domain to our nameservers and after the DNS changes propagate fully, which can take up to 24 hours, you will be able to enable it through SiteTools > Speed > CDN Customer Experience Specialist: You can have a look at our tutorial here https://eu.**hostingprovider**.com/kb/manage-cdn/ Steve ****: hmm when I look at the cloudflare dns records there are quite a lot actually and I'm worried im disconnecting something else here Steve ****: could i share a screenshot with you maybe? Customer Experience Specialist: Of course, I will enable the upload option now Steve ****: for example I have an spf record like this Steve ****: "v=spf1 ip4:78.137.164.89 +mx +a +a:server1.**invoicing software**.com +a:server2.**invoicing software**.com ~all" System: Upload File Option enabled System: The visitor has uploaded file: /tmp/aQXn9EWJb2f2itc18YugMZ48J.pdf [0 KiB] Download Steve ****: to do with our quote software I think Steve ****: but im not sure Customer Experience Specialist: Thank you, Steve, if you're concerned that changing the nameservers may affect some external services, you can just replicate these records in our DNS Zone Customer Experience Specialist: You can update the value of the current SPF record added in SiteTools > Domain > DNS Zone Editor with the one currently added in Cloudflare Steve ****: ok I dont really know what all of these are for though, should I copy them all? Customer Experience Specialist: I'm really not able to confirm this since I'm also not sure to which external services the domain is linked Customer Experience Specialist: To make sure there is no downtime with any services of the domain, you can add all the records in our DNS Zone as well Steve ****: would this cause conflicts though maybe? like how will it know to use the **hostingprovider** server instead of my old one? Customer Experience Specialist: The nameservers of the domain define which DNS Zone is active Customer Experience Specialist: So once you change the nameservers with ours, the active DNS records of the domain will be the ones added in SiteTools Steve ****: ok so with my domain registrar it will point to ns1.**hostingprovider**.net after I make these changes whih means the ones in sitetools will be active Customer Experience Specialist: Exactly :) Customer Experience Specialist: Our nameservers are: ns1.**hostingprovider**.net ns2.**hostingprovider**.net Steve ****: but if I add all the old ones from cloudflare, they will all be active? like A ********** **ip address** I assume I should not all Steve ****: add Steve ****: because I want to point to **hostingprovider**s A **********. **ip address** Customer Experience Specialist: That's correct Customer Experience Specialist: The A records of the domain and "www" should point to us Customer Experience Specialist: In order for the website to open from our server Steve ****: ok that one I understand but im not sure how to apply that logic to the whole list Steve ****: ok so just those two should not be copied? Steve ****: I also have CNAME www ********** Customer Experience Specialist: You don't need to apply any changes to the A records of ********** and www.********** in our DNS Zone Customer Experience Specialist: This CNAME is not needed since www is already pointed by default to our IP address Customer Experience Specialist: In the screenshot you sent, I see that there are A records added to the subdomains test.**********, test2.********** and mobile.********** Customer Experience Specialist: From what I see these don't seem to be working sites Customer Experience Specialist: So if you don't need these subdomains, you will not need to replicate their records in our DNS Zone Steve ****: no those are legacy things for sure, I will ignore those Steve ****: thanks for spotting Customer Experience Specialist: Most welcome, Steve :) Steve ****: and I see some things that are related to the old hosting provider and cpanel which i can ignore Customer Experience Specialist: The one added for cpanel is also not needed Customer Experience Specialist: Exactly :) Steve ****: There are two CNAME k2._domainkey dkim2.mcsv.net DNS only I think I should copy it is to do with mailchimp Customer Experience Specialist: If these records are linked to a service you're using, then I advise you to add them Customer Experience Specialist: I would like to mention that we recently launched our own email marketing tool, which can be activated and managed through the **hostingprovider** account directly Customer Experience Specialist: It comes with a very user-friendly interface, an integrated AI support, different email templates and many more, and it is very easy-to-use Steve ****: good to know, ill just try to keep everything functioning for the moment htough ;) Steve ****: thanks Customer Experience Specialist: Of course! Steve ****: ok I dont want to keep anything on my current hosting provider so wherever I can see their IP address I can ignore I think? Customer Experience Specialist: If you're not using any of their services, then you don't need to add their records in our DNS Zoner Customer Experience Specialist: DNS Zone, sorry :) Steve ****: great that makes it a lot simpler Steve ****: ok another detail, on cloudflare there is the option for TTL to be set to auto but on **hosting provider** it has to be a time, what should I do with the ones set to auto? Customer Experience Specialist: You can just leave the default TTL settings Steve ****: ok great, also there is a record like this: TXT _dmarc v=DMARC1; p=none; DNS only 5 min Steve ****: on site tools the name becomes _dmarc.**********. Steve ****: is this still going to work? Steve ****: sorry so many questions! Customer Experience Specialist: No worries at all! Customer Experience Specialist: I'm here to help :) Customer Experience Specialist: I can confirm that it is going to work as expected Customer Experience Specialist: Even if you're not seeing it the same way in Cloudflare, the DNS records are always added to the domain Customer Experience Specialist: You can see this record here https://www.dnswatch.info/dns/dnslookup?la=en&host=_dmarc.**********&type=TXT&submit=Resolve Steve ****: ah ok great Steve ****: but then when cloudflare says TXT ********** "google-site-verification=DQgSV0rpZfooPpbtJcfuDAmEBsCOABMY_MWlca8_nkQ" DNS only Auto Steve ****: I should leave the name blank? not typ Customer Experience Specialist: Exactly :) Steve ****: nice, nearly there Customer Experience Specialist: To add a record to the domain itself, you just need to leave the Name field blank Steve ****: ok im down to the last two in the list which are both spf records. but site tools gets a little annoyed at me when I try to add them, it says there can only be one spf Steve ****: also I think in the instructions you sent earlier for setting up google mail, that was trying to get me to change the spf also Customer Experience Specialist: You can update the value of the existing SPF record and I would recommend including Google's SPF as well if you're sending emails from their servers Customer Experience Specialist: In the list of existing records, you will find a TXT records with the value: v=spf1 +a +mx include:_524f5a5faf3a128214cb25f72eeb3d08.spf.****************.net ~all Steve ****: yep I see it Customer Experience Specialist: You can click on Edit next to this record and update the value to: v=spf1 ip4:78.137.164.89 +mx +a +a:server1.**invoicing software**.com +a:server2.**invoicing software**.com ~all or to this one to include Google's SPF as well" v=spf1 ip4:78.137.164.89 +mx +a +a:server1.**invoicing software**.com +a:server2.**invoicing software**.com include:_spf.google.com ~all Steve ****: ah great thank you Steve ****: its ok that the dnssmarthost bit is gone? Customer Experience Specialist: This is our SPF record: include:_524f5a5faf3a128214cb25f72eeb3d08.spf.******************.net Customer Experience Specialist: It should be included if you're going to send emails from our server as well Customer Experience Specialist: I suggested replacing the value since from what I understand, you're using Google Workspace for the emails Steve ****: yes correct Steve ****: "It should be included if you're going to send emails from our server as well" I have emails being sent from wordpress on the **hostingprovider** server, does that count? Steve ****: woocommerce order confirmation emails and things like that Customer Experience Specialist: I see, in this case, I would recommend including our SPF as well Customer Experience Specialist: You can edit again the value with: v=spf1 ip4:78.137.164.89 +mx +a +a:server1.**invoicing software**.com +a:server2.**invoicing software**.com include:_spf.google.com include:_524f5a5faf3a128214cb25f72eeb3d08.spf.****************.net ~all Steve ****: Ok just checked the setup, we use a plugin called WP Mail SMTP which links the wordpress mails to google Steve ****: im not sure if that has any effect, makes sense if i use the one including your servers just in case? Steve ****: your spf Customer Experience Specialist: Our SPF would be needed if the WP Mail SMTP plugin is configured to send emails from our server Customer Experience Specialist: Of course, you can include it just in case Steve ****: ill do that I think Steve ****: thanks very much Customer Experience Specialist: My pleasure, Steve! :) Customer Experience Specialist: If anything else comes up or if you need any further assistance, feel free to contact us, we are available 24/7 Steve ****: ah one other small thing actually before you go :) Customer Experience Specialist: Sure! Steve ****: im just at the end of the gmail setup instructions, the bit about DKIM Steve ****: should I be doing that now, or after dns propogation of the nameservers? Customer Experience Specialist: From what I see, this records isn't added currently, but still I would recommend adding it to make sure the domain is properly authenticated with Google Customer Experience Specialist: You can obtain it and add it now, or after changing the nameservers of the domain Steve ****: ok great, might as well do it now then while im working on these things Steve ****: thanks so much for your help with all of these things ******! Customer Experience Specialist: The pleasure was mine, Steve! Customer Experience Specialist: And don't hesitate to contact us in case you need our help :) Steve ****: thanks! Customer Experience Specialist: Most welcome! Customer Experience Specialist: Have a great day and take care!
