Otto Neurath, logical philosophy major exponent, developed the Isotype system in collaboration with Gern Arntz. In some of the designs the worker is repeated and the single becomes indistinguishable. Could repetition produce a subject?
In 1938, Walter Benjamin wrote "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" as a response to the shock caused by modernity. According to Benjamin, people were constantly distracted by such ways of reproducing time as movie editing.
The work of culture in the age of cybernetic systems, Bill Nichols 1988
The text is about shift in subjectivity. We are constituted by a network.( this reminds of a project by Fake Press called The birth of the electronic man). How we are performing our subjetivity within this network?
Main issue: Formation of subjectvity
Cyburbia by James Harkin 2010. He worked with Adam Curtis (watch The Trap!)
Movie: The Communications Primer, by Charles and Ray Eames 1953, information movie made for the american telephone company (Bell).
People inspiring the movie:
Claude Shannon, working at the Bell company
Norbert Wiener, father of cybernetic.
Interesting notion of noise.
This movie can be considered as a cultural object that sells a new view on world and society.
What's cybernetics? The science of feedback. Asking for feedback. Feedback could be the current way in which we form our subjectivity. (check it!)
Film: Redundancy, bit on off, communication keeps together people, symbols, retino as bit, punched cards, seurat, communication = responsibility of decision.
Macy conferences started after second world war .. people came together to talk about feedbacks. Feedback as a sort of social relationship.
Eames Bell telephone company. The film is about the onthology of communication. Everything is communication. From simple to complex. Reality as encoded. (wave)
Narrative of reality by Shannon and Wiener. Epistemologic: the way how we know things. Onthologic: what the thing is. Code and feedback.
We are encoded in a biological way: dna.
Code = legitimazing information economy.
Life → operational
onthology of feedbacks from aircrafts to everything,
bateson: feedback in the center.
Positivist utopias: Buckminster Fuller & Marshall McLuhan.
How we became posthuman?: Regime of computation.
Dna is coding reality.
- Benjamin: the subject in modernity.
- Nichols: the contemporary subject, shaped by cybernetics and simulation
- Harkin: how this things worked out
- Maurizio Lazzarato: Immaterial Labour
Increasingly we become the commodities, we have to maintain visibility. We are encouraged to become individual and this individuality has a commodity value. Selling oneself. Being become commodified.
Buy a pizza, communication act.
Facebook: we are the product?
Time magazine, picture body as piece of information.
How the text is historically connected?
Benjamin : Arcades Project. When you break text in part the ideology become visible.
