The assignment was to create a work inspired upon another work.
During the sessions of this Thematic Project we read a text by Laura Marks on the birth of the algorithm. This text was exemplified by Persian carpets, which during the ages became more and more complex. They used to have distinguishable lines. Trying to follow the lines became a practice of meditation. Over time though, these line structures became more and more complex. So complex that they could not be followed anymore and, according to Marks, the complexity of the structures hid the emptiness behind them.
This remark made me thing about structures in our world. For example, banking structures have become more complex over the decades. Their complexity hides their emptiness from our (the consumer's) eyes.
The same thing is going on in the clothing production system. We know something is wrong in the factories where most of our clothing and their fabrics are produced. But these factories are on the other side of the planet and there is a complex network of suppliers, distributors and stores that masks this from our view and minds. But above all, there is our ego, our wish to look good, that makes us oblivious for these wrongs.
