In God We Trust All Others We Monitor

collection of unit insigna of UAV squadrons

A collaborative effort with Micha and Dave. During a working residency in Upominki in Rotterdam I started to further digest the reading of the first trimester and to work with the UAV patches I've been collecting lately. The result of the research will be output in a small zine made by the three of us. To this end Dave and me are writing an article based on thoughts and talks we had about the intersection of networks like the internet, geopolitics and recent events. The opening of the exhibition is the 21st of December, this will also be the presentation of the zine.

BYOB @ Kunstvlaai

For Kunstvlaai 2012 the Force of Freedom was asked to exhibit in Upominki's space during it's 'Day shifts: taking turns' exhibition. During this exhibition every day of the Kunstvlaai a different artist was asked to work in the space. The Force of Freedom kicked off 'Day shifts: taking turns' on the opening day of the festival.

So on the 23rd of november The Force of Freedom hosted an open BYOB (Bring your own beamer) event, providing a chance for any creator/collector of digital graphics to come exhibit his or her work during this otherwise heavily curated event.

The idea is to continue the loop of Kunstvlaai inviting Upominki and Upominki inviting us, so we invite our friends and they invite their friends in turn.

Straight outta Tumblr

A small exhibition in the entrance of the W139 in Amsterdam. Where we showed images from force-of-freedom.tumblr.com in combination with a laser-cut reinterpretation of Michelangelo's David. To show the images I wrote (copy pasted) a script that would randomly read files to display from a folder on our website, so as we made more work for the blog, more would appear in the W139 slideshow. During the show the owner of the famous condom shop next to the W139 expressed interest in renting the sculpture, so until January that is where it can be seen.

Beer

Started producing beer with Micha and Will. It's quite a fascinating process, from the grain to the bottle it's a balance between chemistry, luck, taste and experience. Now looking for suppliers of malts to have enough ingredients to be able to practice a lot and gain some proficiency. The first batch should be ready for consumption end of January.

Project description

The 23rd of January 2012 the Piratebay added a new Physibles section on their website. With this they anticipated a future where at some point people will be able to download (pirated) designs for physical objects and then will be able to easily create those objects themselves using digital fabrication technologies.

Inspired by this vision we began a hands-on research project geared towards digital manufacturing. Our focus was on how these technologies could be used to give more power and autonomy to individuals. In the course of our graduation project we embarked on a series of interventions, workshops and experiments to see to what extent this promise of power and autonomy could be realised with the current digital manufacturing technologies.

An example of this hands-on research is a workshop we organised in Ikea to see to what extent existing furniture could be reverse enginered and digitally (re)produced. The goal of this workshop was to use ikea's infrastructure against itself and produce a set of reverse enginered objects within a day.

Because Ikea's furniture is already so cheap it has little economical purpose to reverse engineer their furniture. However we found out that Vitra.com hosted their entire catalog of exclusive designer furniture in handy CAD files, ready to use for digital manufacturing. We were able to produce these at a fraction of the retail price, and so will others.

Next to that we also did a series of 3d printing experiments in which we used these printers to try to get access to restricted places by reverse engineering and printing special keys.

As a result of these experiments we are now designing a online database where users can upload, share and download designs of this nature: www.partsba.se
