Apology Script (as public announcement)

May I please have everyone’s attention: I would like to address an important issue tonight. Beginning at 7 o'clock this evening ,Thursday the 5th of July, most of you have filled out a personality quiz in exchange for a drink. You have shared your data and identity with us, which we then published onto social media platforms. This was all stated in the terms which you agreed to before submitting the test. We realise this wasn’t stated clearly enough. I’m the first to admit that we've made a bunch of mistakes. We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you anymore free drinks tonight.

There was a breach of trust between us and the people who share their data with us and expect us to protect it. For example Max Franklin, I apologise for revealing that you have a criminal record on social media. Franc you may not have wanted everybody to know your best friends name is Susan online, and Ryan, sorry for stating you have frequent mood swings to the public. Giulia not everyone should know you were born in Italy. And those many other individuals who willingly filled out the quiz. These people’s information is now online. They will find that to unpublish let alone to delete their data will be nearly impossible, some tedious and unnecessary efforts will have to be undertaken. We need to fix that.

May I stress that with the change of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) law enforced in Europe on the 25th of May this year, we still made sure none of our actions were illegal, and users have the right to have their data erased under certain circumstances. However, we didn’t take a broad enough view of our responsibility, and that was a big mistake. It was my mistake, and I’m sorry. I started this quiz, I run it, and I’m responsible for what happens here.

I've been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn't happen again. The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today is already in the process of happening, but we also made mistakes, there's more to do, and we need to step up and do it. It will take some time to work through all of the changes we need to make, but I’m committed to getting it right.

I am idealistic and optimistic. For most of my existence, I focused on all the good that connecting people through drinking at no cost can bring. As the drinking culture has grown, people everywhere have had the confidence to stay connected to the people they love, make their voices heard, and build communities and businesses.

I want to thank all of you who continue to believe in my mission and work to build this drinking community together. I know it takes longer to fix all these issues than we'd like, but I promise you we'll work through this and build a better service over the long term.

We would like to invite you to move to the next room (Slash Gallery) where you can now pay for your drinks, this time with no breach of trust on our part (though we can’t promise your bank isn’t invading your data). Thank you for listening and have a great night!
