Annotation

This serie starts and ends the same way every time. Men entering a room with a table. On the table a miniature scene is set up. They start playing music and the camera zooms in on the scene on the table. Then you enter the story scene, which is not in miniature, but looks the same as the miniature. The story is told while they frequently return to the table miniature scene and back into the story again.

What I like and why

I like this series visually because of the shifting between realties. They use really nice transitions to go from one reality into the one of the story and alternate between these realities. They show how they make the sounds and how they set up the miniature scenes, but at the same time show this other reality convincingly. They make the look of behind the scenes part of the story, part of the concept. That are things I really like.

Connection with my work

In that way it is also connected to my work, to what I try to do; Show different realities but bringing them together. I used this reality swifts as transitions in my project ´Theekeningen (wehavemetthedaylightbefore)´ (2009)

In that project different animation techniques are used, but they make a coherent story.

The title ´Theekeningen´ reveals already the process you will see in this video. In Dutch thee means tea, tekeningen means drawings. Combining these two you have ´theekeningen´ aka ´tea drawings´, drawings made from tea stains. You see the process of the tea-drawing from stain till puppet animation.

  • The making of the stain with a tea-bag (Photo animation of real action)
  • The stain evolving into a drawing of two creatures(time lapse animation)
  • The creatures coming to live on paper and try to escape from it.(Drawn animation)
  • Dripping into a 3D space where they reform themselves into 3D puppets.(Stop-Motion puppet animation)
