Urban Small Talk

Ust-sticker(1).png

The idea for this project came after the first radio show I participated in. As we prepared the assets, we mustered a wide variety of Rotterdam field recordings, which I then decided would be nice to archive in a Radio Aporee-esque map of Rotterdam. Coincidentally, around the same time, I came across a tutorial on how to create your own custom maps. I had perfect opportunity to combine these two instances!
Screenshot 2024-10-26 223107.png
The first iteration of this project was done using UMAP. It would be the easiest way, yet the most rigid one, since the result would be an iframe. There was not way to mess around with it and I didn't like the lack of creative freedom I was faced with. So I decided to take matters into my own hands.

Issues I had to overcome 👾

Making my own soundmap from scratch meant that I also needed to create a database for the sounds, one that xpub members would have access to upload on AND find a way for the map to get updated automatically. With the help of Manetta, I came up with a wonderful solution:

data.csv is created fetching the p elements through the wikis api, the json result is parsed with beautifulsoup4 to turn into cleaner html and finally to csv! Then we created a cronjob that would update the map every once in a while. (is it still running? 🤔)

The final version of the map ultilizes the leaflet.js library and a wiki page as the database for the markers' information.

Okay??🙄 So what??🤔

This was my first serious coding project. I pushed myself down a javascript rabbithole, through which came out mildly scathed yet victorious. Note that before this project I didn't even know what console.log() does. This was officially my first ever, consciously created, digital archive!!

Lost In Narration

On maybe the second or third Prototyping session with Joseph, we got introduced and experiemented with VCV Rack. I still remember the whimsy I felt when my laptop got turned into a MIDI piano keyboard. The MIDI input option got me thinking of other ways to input data. It would be interesting to speak into a microphone and get incoherent sound, maybe even music, as an output. I started experiementing that same evening, ending up with a composition I lovingly named Mosquito Farts.

and then Cyber Bubbles

I proudly showed my cohort the next day, and they were too impressed by this monstrocity! Kiara then told me how she's aware of a python code that can turn speech to text. And thus, the Lost in Narration idea was born.

I proceeded to create a number of modular variations for the SI25 Public Moment.

This was the final configuration:

Okay??🙄 So what??🤔

I've been meaning to dip my toes in sound production, or experiementation, for a while— It might sound like a brag, but I have a somewhat innate flair for many art and craft forms, yet sound/music is part of the ones I hadn't given a chance to. It felt liberating, working with a new medium.

3DS Web Zine

↪ dungeon architecture

I will be completely transparent with you; This project only piqued my interest when a storytelling/game aspect was suggested and introduced (by me?). Then, suddenly a switch was flipped and i was LOCKED IN. I was responsible for coming up with the dungeon architecture, how the player would navigate the space and what strategies they would face in each room.

↪ mpo files (page)

first mpo experiement

Since finding out that the 3D pictures the 3DS takes are .mpos, I went on a day long research spree for this obscure file format. Besides the generic information on how it got to be in the first place and figuring out how to make ones, the research got me thinking of alternative ways to make use of this odd format.
crossword mpo

At first, I created my first .mpo image by combining two completely different images, just to see what happened. The result reminded me of the lenticular cards I used to love growing up.

Then I considered the on/off option the nintendo provided. If the 3D effect was off, what was left of the mpo file? Turns out, only the left eye image stays, which in turn means that when 3D is toggled on, the right eye image is unravelled to the viewer. This sounds suspiciously similar to storytelling...

I started investigating the storytelling capabilities of mpo files. First I created a crossword that gets filled out when 3D gets toggled on. Then I made a silly treasure map minigame as my second test. File:Mpo test.mp4

Lingering Thoughts: There is no way to experience an mpo file, if you don't have the right hardware. The way the .mpo files work, by layering two displays on top of each other to create the 3D effect, got me thinking of ways to possibly replicate it with simple css. Could two img elements, positioned just right, with a blending mode on work the same way on a browser?

↪ strategies

It was fun coming up with the css/js strategies for the game. I came up with the trapdoor mechanism, the rune door and the password! Javascript is friendshaped now! Will add more here once the game is finished!!!

miscellaneous adventures

Blorbo Beam

Finding out how easy it is to make browser extensions in prototyping classes with Joseph got me super hyped!! and thinking... I need to make my own!!! Sidenote: Fanfiction plays a major role in my life; sometimes you just need a silly little story to get you through the day. Archive of Our Own (aka AO3) is a fan-run digital archive of fanworks, mainly fan fiction pieces of any fandom under the sun.

The Blorbo Beam extension filters the search results on AO3 based on if your preferred ship is listed first in each work. An example for the normies— yes you too; Imagine that you wish to read a Medieval AU (a story taking place in an Alternative Universe) of Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. There are search results available for your query, but sadly it turns out they are listed in the tags only because they are a side/background couple in the work. The extension dims the opacity of the works that do not list your lovely pairing as the protagonists!!

Okay??🙄 So what??🤔

Fandoms are only alive as long as the fans themselves keep creating, sharing, interacting, uplifting creator's voices. I am looking into doing my part! I'm very interested in what I like to call fancoding.
reviews are in; the nerds love it!!!

(fan)Arts & (fan)Crafts

Generative AI is a nightamare that has been spreading like the plague, sucking the life out of everything it touches like a leech. It's no wonder that it has managed to reach fanfiction as well. Archive of our Own hosts over 4k works that have been unabashedly tagged as Created Using Generative AI and there is no way of knowing how many more are the result of some chatgpt prompt.

Okay??🙄 So what??🤔

reference
My thoughts on the matter are still heated and tangled up, yet I have decided to express my grievance through creating. Inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement, I've been trying ways to turn fanfiction into manuscript-like pages. Lingering Thoughts: What form could the project take? Paged.js was a good initial idea, but it is not really meant to be printed. What if I just worked on css? Then extensions got put into perspective, so maybe it could be another AO3 web extension. No matter the final form of the project, what I'm striving for is painstakenly handmade design, full of soulful, human errors by fans for fans. A homage to the human fanfic writer.

House of Loves

Loveletters.jpg
XPUB deserves more love proclamations! Or at least that's what Sevgi, Chrissy and I thought on the Prototyping class just before Valentine's Day. Inspired by House of Leaves poems, and a bunch of matrix printers waiting for us on our desks, we wrote a python code to generate a love poem for every single person in our cohort.

Why learn something new and not use it to spread love????

Quest Zine

On our first official XPUB day, we were asked to bring an image as a way to introduce ourselves. At first, I thought about showing a meme that I believed represented my temperament, though after seeing everyone else's submissions, I felt like my initial idea was silly and inferior. I now know better, but I digress. At the last minute, I decided to show a screenshot of one of my instagram account projects, @exeisneoquest. The nerds LOVED IT.

The practice of archiving is a fairly new concept to me and since the first trimester, I catch my thoughts drifting back to archiving as a love language— towards a piece of media, a digital project, an experience. I made the Quest Zine in December in an attempt to archive my beloved instagram project physically, while also taking advantage of the lovely Riso printers <3

Adafruit Experiements

little guy 🎀

I don't remember where the idea came from, but I found myself blindly following a biodata sonification tutorial. I spent weeks looking up equipment, making orders and waiting in front of the door like a puppy for the delivery to arrive, just so that I could hear my beloved plants sing to me! How naive I was... Of course a copy-pasted code from years ago would not work effortlessly. Long story short, I accepted my inability to out of the blue write, understand and troubleshoot code written in C. Thus, I was left with an idle Adafruit microcontroller.

On a different note, during one of my are.na browsing afternoons (a more acceptable way of wasting time than pinterest, but only so,) I came across a zine on how to make your own pocket wi-fi portal, using, lo and behold, an adafruit! I managed to set it up to the point of access and viewing the html page and I am still pondering on the way to make use of it.

Okay??🙄 So what??🤔

I GUESS WE'LL SEE!

Bootleg Library

Aaron Swartz - Guerilla Open Access Manifesto
There is great fulfilment to be felt from watching a library grow like a garden. During the past semester I've enjoyed playing librarian, collecting and uploading PDFs, copies of varying legality, to the bootleg library. I enjoy making use of my browsing prowess and free time to provide resources.

Okay??🙄 So what??🤔

I love the bootleg library!!!! Therefore it is my duty to water it and help it grow!!!

Ren'py Game

Screenshot 2025-03-29 191503.jpg
Despite my mother's best wishes, I do make friends online. Alongside my new pixel gang, Bea and Bertie, I've taken up the project of bringing Bertie's Game Concept Art BA thesis to life. During the past month or so, I've been looking into beginner-friendly game engines for visual novels. Ren'py seems to be the best option!!! I've managed to make the most basic frames work of course, but I haven't had the time to delve into the possibilities Ren'py could offer.

Okay??🙄 So what??🤔

This seems like a challenging yet doable project for my noobie state, and I don't have to work for every single aspect of the game on my own!

↪ Storytelling

As time passes and I get to know myself more, both as an individual and an artist, I have come to the realization that I am always on the hunt for a good story to tell or be told.

↪ Piracy as a love language

Growing up, I remember binders filled to the brim with burnt CDs and DVDs, bootleg copies of games, movies and music albums, all around my father's house. I have been pirating media since I was able to use a computer, tiptoeing around limewire as if it was a minefield to download my favourite songs.

Sailormoondub.jpeg
Piracy is a love language, it is preservation and dare I say, the new folk art— passed down from word of mouth, learned over shoulders.
