Scarcity and creativity research

Scarcity can be closely related to creativity. When people find themselves in a position of lacking of resources, they have to squeeze their imagination to come up with new solutions.

Project "scarcity is beautiful"

The project Scarcity is Beautiful, by Paulo Goldstein, experiments with the idea of lacking of resources. He and his team design an empty room and it's furniture with material found in the streets of London.

Remix art

What if instead of adding, one redistributes what is there already? This quote by Paulo Goldstein reminds me of Remix culture.

Remix art is to alter a piece from it's original state by adding, removing, changing, etc. It is the action of using created stuff and change and mix it with other materials to create something new.

ReFunct Media by Benjamin Gaulon

Benjamin Gaulon is an artist, researcher and art collage lecturer, who focuses his study and work on planned obsolescence, consumerism and disposable society, between other topics. In his piece of work ReFunct media he makes multimedia installations with obsolete electronic devices.

The relation between his work and scarcity is that he tinkers with obsolete electronic devices. Which - from my point of view- are the residues from some of the main causes of scarcity:

  1. The fact of consuming too much
  2. Wasting too early and too often
  3. Continue consuming new resources, instead of using what its there already

DISTRIBUTION TEAM

The Special Issue team has been divided into 4 groups to complete the project: Editors, Designers, Producers and Distributors. I am in the DISTRIBUTORS team

A timeline has been made in order to organise ourselves. The tasks pendent to be done, have been divided into the following categories: Intelligence (information we need to complete tasks, ex: research about distribution, audience, etc), contacts, finance, promotion, providing. Next, the tasks have been situated at the correct place on the timeline.
