Meeting 03 (08-10-09)

7 recursive projects:

  • Day 1 - I will use the pictures of a webcam on the Northpole, for me a quite antisocial area of the world. http://www.awi.de/NM_WebCam/pictoflastP.html
  • Day 2 - I tried to capture the webcam. It was tricky since they name every image by the actual northpole-time. After some connection losses I still managed to gather some images and combined them in a huge looping gif-animation. Here we go, the Northpole:
User Birgit Bachler plan pole.gif
  • Day 3 - I wante to use the same image material in another context. Since the website stores the images over the past 24 hours it's also possible to create a movie in realtime. As a Mac user I used Quartz Composer, because of the possibility to use it as a Screensaver. If you're not using your machine for some time it will show you the last 24 hours of Northpole images. For me that is a great view on the beauty of void.

Download Surveillance Screen Saver (To use a .qtz as a Screensaver on a Mac copy the file to Macintosh HD/Library/Screen Savers in order to be able to choose it in the System Preferences menu.)

  • Day 4 - Probably I am not the only person who considers facebook anti-social. I kind of see a nice connection between the Northpole-images and facebook-updates, status-messages, comments... in the end it is all a grayish fluctuating vacuousness on a screen avoiding any real-life human social interaction.

Additionally I found out that status updates of friends can be accessed by anyone through RSS-feeds. So without being my facebook-"friend", not even a member of facebook you can follow what happens around my account with that link .

So I integrated these status-updates in my Screensaver, to be downloaded here .

  • Day 5 - Back to Max: I tried to mix the live stream with already recorded material, what resulted in gray randomness. This patch could run forever as long as Internet connection is available, here is a short recording to get an image:

This is the text that goes with the image-snippet: While mixing the livestream randomly I also randomized the last results on the keywords 'anti social' on twitter through dadadodo:

  • Day 6 - I decided to combine the randomness of information by working further on the Quartz Composer Project, using some facebook-updates of fellow students in my application. It shows at one point the useless information being fed to all of us. In order to protect their privacy I only post some screenshots of the app and not the app itself:

  • Day 7 - A reflection of my projects done in one week:

Why is there a webcam on the Northpole?

Is it for surveillance? Who is being watched? And who is watching?

People that plan to visit the Northpole?

How many of them exist?

Or is it more for people who will never be able to get there themselves?

What does the picture really show in the end of this very special place of our planet?

Can we follow the Global Warming from our screen?

For me the Northpole represents a fascination of a continuously shifting and changing environment.

I tried to find a connection between the existence of that webcam with the existence of (anti)social platforms.

In the end we are just watching pixels.

Facebook gives us the chance to see blurry information about a 'friend'.

Probably the chance to visit the North Pole is equal than ever seeing this person again.

We follow random movements in the distance.

Does it make more sense to watch a webcam on the North Pole than watching people updating their status?

It's both staring at a screen.

And we are just seeing pixels whatsoever.

Meeting 04 (15-10-09)

The Over-Identification of products

What identification do products in a supermarket have? I came across so many different sorts of logos and labels on different products, that I wanted to go deeper into that matter. After having looked at several identification-labels I decided to concentrate on "Fair Trade" and "Puur en eerlijk":
Fair Trade products that meet the standards of the Fair Trade Organization, working on better deals for producers. That could lead to the assumption, that all products not being labeled are officially declared as "Unfair Trade" or "Exploitation" products. I created to variations for a possible label to put on all other products, that do not meet these standards.

The Dutch supermarket chain Albertheijn introduced a new palette of products named puur en eerlijk (pure and fair-minded) including such as fair-traded, biological, ecological products. To keep up proper identification of all products I also created a label for products not part of that palette, both in Dutch and in English:

This quick sketch shows how these over-identifiable products would look in the rack:

User Birgit Bachler plan comparison.jpg

One interesting detail I came across during my research: The eco-washing-up-liquid: According to the text on the back this product has been produced under eco-friendly circumstances, cleans very effectively while even being mild and nurturing to the hands. Surprisingly it is the only product in the rack, that is additionally labeled with a chemical hazard warning saying "irritant".
According to wikipedia this identification stands for chemical hazard: contains substances that cause irritation when in contact with skin, and eyes. Do not inhale and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Happy washing!

Meeting 05 (29-10-09)

READ:

DO:
communication-channel: online <> offline

After my first thoughts on the project had to do with rather musical expression, my main interest shifted towards 'speech'. With the picture of a 'speaker' in mind and the inspiration of conventional 'speaker corners' I made a sketch of a possible digital speakers' corner. Your voice, streamed via internet, is transmitted through a speaker on a speaker's desk in public space. Freedom of opinion, autonomy from geographics, the voice from cyberspace speaking to the real world.

User Birgit Bachler plan speaker.jpg

Technical realization:
The sender (online): A simple streaming-webserver, no login necessary, simple priviledge-system: first come first serve - all people with internet access may use the channel that records and streams sound live.
The receiver (offline): A speaker connected to a system grabbing the audio-stream, placed in the speaker's corner, in public. Further development:
The question whether the talker should get feedback from the offline space is one big issue. The most basic solution, which I favour, is just recording the on-location sound and stream it back to the webserver, accessible and audible by the user, so listeners have the chance to cheer or boo. There's always the issue of delay, of course. Further techniques such as using cams or motion detectors go to far for the simple 'speaker' idea.
Maybe it would be nice to give the talker a sort of 'transparent', such as a screen or a led-board where the talker can use a limited number of characters to describe the ideas, ideology, topic that he is talking about.
I like the idea that the sender is online but the reception of the content is only possible when on location. It seems like offline talks and speeches in person have more impact than web-content like blogs. I want to bring the medium 'free speech' to anyone and transfer it into an offline, conventional location, that people already know, and you can also reach the offline-mass.
