What How Why

Today task was writing two 150 words (300 total) texts on a project with the structure of What (subject) How (method) and why (motivation).

Task for next week

  • Read one of the "old" texts provided by Steve and provide a contemporary text that correspond with it.
  • Research speculative interfaces and find people who work in this field.

Writing about a project

For my graduation project I did a project about “Digital Death”. The project came from the notion that nowadays our digital assets are most of the time more valuable than the physical ones. While there are certain social norms regarding how to handle material belongings when a person dies, the spiritual belongings that exist in the digital world are not always taken care of. In my project I created a portal that gathers all the digital belongings of someone who died in one place. It contains photos, videos, text from social media and so on. All is curated, catalogued according to different parameters and accessible in an easy way to whoever the deceased chose to give access to. I decided to tackle this issue because I felt this is a “new problem” that came into our lives when technology became such a big part of it. Unlike material things that are more straightforward, this subject is “grey” and raises a lot of questions regarding ethics, spiritual property, our social media presence and more.

In our third year in university we, a group of 12 friends and design student, decided to publish a zine. Each issue of the zine will have a different subject and we funded it ourselves on a tight budget that won’t burden us. Each issue was given a subject and a format (chosen randomly by members from the group) and each one of us produced 2 images for the zine that were placed in random order. We printed it in black & white and sold it for a symbolic price in different venues and art fairs. We started making this zine in a point in our studies that we felt too much part of a routine. Our creative process was mostly based on projects that were given to us at school and were part of a curriculum. We wanted to make our own creative space were we can be free.

Synopsis for "APPLIED METAPHYSICS: OBJECTS IN OBJECT-ORIENTED ONTOLOGY AND OBJECT-ORIENTED-PROGRAMMING" by GABRIEL YORAN

1.Western world is oriented to the I (kant ideas) anthropocentric-regarding humankind as the central or most important element of existence, especially as opposed to God or animals. 2. Speculative realists are suggesting a different approach that can be feasible by expanding philosophy to not be human centred. 3. We will focus on object-oriented-ontology(the branch of metaphysics dealing with the nature of being.) also known as OOO (a theory by Graham Harman, a speculative realist and contemporary American philosopher). 4. OOO emerged from the internet and it is digital-based.It is a computational medium-based philosophy and therefore has overdetermined characteristics that correlates to it’s origin. It also grew in times when object-oriented-programming was already invented (in the late 60’s) and has some parallels to it. 5. Object-oriented programming was invented in the 60’s.In oop data and functions were created as units that are used in programming languages. Oop is still very popular and the base for a lot if programming languages. The similarities between oop and ooo is understood- both computer science and philosophy do not address the materiality of things. oop made it possible to create more complex software like forecasting weather (simulation).
