Abstract

At first sight advertising and spam seem like similar forms of persuasion, to make us buy something, and their tactics are not that distinct. However there seems to be a significant difference in the way advertisement and spam are perceived. One is legitimate and can surround our visual and aural environment at any time or place, whereas spam, just as the the handle indicates, is distasteful, unsolicited, deceptive, junk that must be kept away from our eyes. Why is there such a differentiated treatment concerning spam and advertising? Where does the difference between the two lay?
