Society in ad-hoc mode:
Decentralised, self-organizing, mobile.
Armin Medosch, 2004
This article by Armin medoch compares and criticizes the use of mobile and wireless media by the government, social communities and activists. Especially focussed on the infrastructure of networks used and formed by these different groups. The article questions the view on self-organization and social progress trough communication technologies. (“free software and free content break down the barrier between producer and consumer. Every reader is a potential writer” Walter Benjamin). The article indicates that advanced communications technologies are not just for the financial gain of the few.
Antisocial Applications:
Notes in support of antisocial not-working
Cox, Geoff, 2008
The notes by Geoff Cox describes the economic and social control within network platforms.
"Personal information (ID and consumer preferences) is voluntarily submitted and can then be accessed by agencies reflecting pervasive viral marketing techniques, hegemonic corporate ownership and capitalistic economic principles – all designed to derive profit from friendship."
"Not all connections in any network are equal and certain connections are granted privileges over others. This is a description of network power that follows 'power laws' of variable, uneven and unequal distribution, and that has learned from history to use all varieties of authority and organisation at its disposal ."
"Crucially, the software and the knowledge to shape it, is no longer stored locally on the user's hard drive but through the browser interface (and in this sense amateur production does become a pressing issue of lack of access to the means of production)."
