Ugo/project proposal

From XPUB & Lens-Based wiki

2018/2019 Last year my research focused on image-making. I built and used shutter-less cameras or I deregulated existing ones to make my images. With existing cameras, I used the rewinding mechanism to pull the film behind the aperture, with the shutter open. The resulting strip-photographs were then used as material for my videos. With my latest film “Abiding” (2019) I worked on the convergence of two historically and culturally determined categories: the photographic and the filmic. Leaning on the notion of continuity and fluidity the project aimed at the creation of new representations and reflections on realities by merging and weaving those two medias. In the process I putted into question the sequential recording and the frame by frame system (ideology) found in most photographic and cinematographic apparatuses.

2019/2020

Main Field of Research: Film & Media Studies

Sub Fields: Philosophy Neuroscience & Psychology of perception History of Film & Image Technology Theory of Cinema Theory of photography Apparatus theory

Main Research Subject: WHAT THE VISUAL RECORDING OF REALITY

How can we visually perceive differently?

How can photographic and cinematographic technologies help us in the process of seeing differently?

What can we learn from neuropsychological disorder affecting visual perception? (Cerebral Akinetopsia or motion blindness)

How can the strip-photography technique be translated into a digital one?

How can recording processes ruled by stillness and fragmentation be twisted to explore the hypothetical fluidity and continuity of reality?

If fluidity and continuity are characteristics of reality, what are the potential of photographic and cinematographic processes to record such qualities?

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO MAKE? Audio-Visual work – Experimental Immersive Documentary Thesis

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO MAKE IT? Building tools & Qualitative methods Building a visual recording process using digital scanner sensors & VR Headset Improving my Strip-photography camera Interviews

WHAT IS YOUR TIMETABLE? Having some visual result by end of October Having a short AV work ready for the Eye researchlabs 2020 Using feedbacks from Eye researchlab to create final work

WHY? I am interested in seeing and recording differently. Integrating doubt and uncertainty in processes.

PREVIOUS PRACTICE Direct continuity of strip-photography research from last year. Developping the neuroscience side
