Protocol for alternating interviewing

From XPUB & Lens-Based wiki

This protocol was úsed by Victor and Thijs when interviewing Ari for show 10 of Protocols for an Active Archive.

When multiple people conduct an interview, at any given time a question is usually asked by one individual interviewer. Typically, this individual's engagement in the conversation is increased in this moment.

Meanwhile, the other interviewer(s) can take a step back to listen, reflect on the conversation so far and the intended or prepared direction of the interview. This way, they may be able to think about other questions than the individual who asked the previous question. This moment creates space for the other(s) to prepare a follow-up question.

Whether the first individual asks the next question or an other interviewer, both are fine. This protocol's purposes are twofold:

  1. create a moment of reflection within the interview
  2. prepare a follow-up question in case one is needed.
