Personal Repo

By group work, we already made a repo of content and structure of the texts,so this repo is more focusing on how I understand about these texts. Suivaillace issues :

“Rusbridger said the NSA stories were "clearly" not a story about totalitarianism, but that an infrastructure had been created that could be dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands. ” We now live in a time without privacy. On the one hand , we can feel the sense of insecurity while using the internet .Since everytime we log in a new website,we are forced to offer our personal information ( such as cookies ) to network companies/websites to get more convience and permit ,even sometimes we don’t have the opportunity to say no. It is like the concept “panopticon”: we know we are being watched,but we cannot see who is watching us. On the other hand , we participate in the survaillance voluntarily ,become performing , make ourselves visible with our online personas , making our data available to the market economy .This is participatory survaillance ,or participatory capitallism. “The Panopticon is a round building like a donut, in the middle there’s a man on a tower who watches everything. People start behaving because this man might be watching. This happens because people start internalizing this surveilled behavior, which contributes to subject formation. ” NSA stories do not only happen in the USA . As a tool to monitor, govern and control society , survaillance would be used by every governments. The problem is who or what can make sure it would not fall into the wrong hands . I got quite negative attitude about this problem. Borned in China, one of the countries which have the strongest interior survaillance system,we can hear and see a lot of “NSA stories”.We know the power is in the wrong hands,but we don’t know if it is the right hand is on the wrong hand’s opposite side—if there is right hand . Political power and economy is conacting so hard, it is a group which is made up by history and blood. That decides changing the owner of power is almost impossible. Disicipline and punish “Instead of bending all its subjects into a single uniform mass,it separats,analyses,differentiates,carries its procedures of decomposition to the point of necessary and sufficient single units.” Big brother does not exist any more. The power is divided. There is an pattern of correct training . When I was in seven grade, our teacher divided the class into four group.Each gourp is a whole management system: intendant,observer,monitor,tutor,writing officer,etc ( The hierarchical oberservation) . Every month , the management group will chang to another one. At the end of the term, the teacher classifies each group,(normalizing judgement) choose the best and the worst.The best group receives prize,the worst must clean the classroom.(examination-classify ,qualify,punish and diagnose). In this pattern,we build a little “disciplinary society”. This little power pyramid has a leader—the teacher, but every student in this class become component of the system—we surpervise , monitor and correct others,at the same time, others also surpervise,monitor,correct us . Discipinary society does not only operate by laws and rules, but also by containing between different hirerarchies.

Postscript on the societies of control

In the societies of control, on the other hand, what is important is no longer either a signature or a number, but a code: the code is a password ,while on the other hand disciplinary societies are regulated by watchwords......We no longer find ourselves dealing with the mass/individual pair. Individualshave become "dividuals," and masses, samples, data, markets, or "banks." Control society has a more stable society pattern than disciplinary society. The discipline and control to people have been internalized in the socity system, the terminal of power ( information and enconomy)are controled tightness by the first class of society.(They control or have the access to codes instead of signature or number,they control the rates of exchange instead of producing cash. It is much accurater and securer ) . Internet becomes part of the control system. And this is one of the most powerful tools to shape people’s thought and behavior ,internet spreads value.Everything in control society has a same goal or has been built for the same goal — keep the commercial chain operating. The companies have soul. The latest American series Elementary narrtives a possible event in control society : the super key has been devised ,by using this key , the owner can get the permits of all kinds of banks ,accounts and encrypt files. Does it symbolize the weak side of this system? Disciplinary society supervises people by correct trainings,it seems the control is more exterior. But in control society , the power is more interior and invisible , it change the way to rule people. The more people change ( in the way which control system prefer ),the less obstruction will come out in control society.
