Reading text & short annotation on "Art and Authenticity" extract from "Languages of art" by Nelson Goodman
In Languages of art Goodman questions the authenticity of the work of art.
He introduces two terms for better understanding - autographic is consider to be the painting, characterized with one stage of production while the nonautographic or so called allographic is executed in two/ three stages (for example compositing). When the work is reproducible or there are multi copies/ instances of the work or it has been performed in various ways it ultimately become an allographic.
"Every art is autographic by default."
Why is the use of notations appropriate in some arts than others? Goodman argues that the notations are significant important for determining the origin of the work, done by establishing the history of production. Hence the forgery could fail to fit to certain properties and rules. What is the value of "digital" work of art, consider as an allegrophic? Who establish the value and through what set up of

  • Then the question is about the value of the autographic vs allegraphic work of art.

does it loose the uniqueness or the signature of its own - the expression of the author melt upon the imitations, copies or forgery?
