About Transmediale 02/11

I participated some workshops; went to some lectures, conferences during Transmediale. After the whole festival, I couldn't say whether I like it or not. I received a lot of input information; some discussion also trigger me to start to think about certain network culture phenomenon. However, i still need to figure out whether those research and methodology fits my own direction. or after Transmediale whether i have a direction or not...........  ;( Anyway the good thing is: i did recorded some interesting sound in Berlin. Although the original plan is record the sound of footstep walking in snow field. But there are no snow anymore. may be next year.............

Makino Takashi Analog film workshop 02/11

I appreciate the beauty of analog film. and really admired the aesthetic and quality of Makino Takashi's work. something simple but complex. 2D also 3D. I am thinking to use After effect scripting link this analog film generated noise pattern opacity data together with digital sound volume. O~~ did i mentioned that i just found out using Sublime write javascript in After effect? could be interesting. may be later try out kinet to generate digital image combined it together.

Media Object: Noise

"Whatever is fitted in any sort to excite the ideas of pain and danger, that is to say, whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about terrible objects, or operates in a manner analogous to terror, is a source of the sublime; that is, it is productive of the strongest emotion which the mind is capable of feeling." _________Edmund Burke, A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful /// I would like to read this every time i try to embodied my ideas into my works.

some random thoughts about noise, media and delusion..

Why media misdirected public attention.

"In the infancy of mass communications the Columbus and Magetllan of broadcast journalism, William Paley and David Sarnoff went down to Washington to cut a deal with Congress. Congress would allow the fledging networks free use of taxpayer-owned airwaves in exchange for one public service. That public service would be one hour of air time set aside every night for informational broadcasting, or what we now call the evening news. Congress unable to anticipate the enormous capacity television would have to deliver consumers to advertisers, failed to include in its deal the one requirement that would have changed our national discourse immeasurably for the better. Congress forgot to add that under no circumstances could there be paid advertising during informational broadcasting. And, now those network news casts anchored through history by honest- to -God newsmen with names like Murrow and Reasoner and Huntley and Brinkley and Buckley and Cronkite and Rather and Russert ...now they have to compete with some cable anchors who's in the exactly same business as the producers of "Jersey Shore" And that business was good to them. "

_____________<news room>

"Well informed" is one of the most important factors to prevent pubic from being ignorant. In this digital age, there are always too much noise stand in between of public and facts. We are always saying that network creating some kind of delusion. It does not mean there no real information or facts online. It just drowned by those noises.( The most watched video or read news aways appears first at the searching engine). I start to think maybe we are actually part of the force to create this noise to prevent ourself from "well informed". Mass media have driven by rating, pubic interest and attention; because that's how media platform attract advertising investment. However, part of our human nature prefer to be a passive role hiding behind the screen watch or listen to innuendo, speculation, hyperbole, and nonsense. Media itself functions to satisfying the most desired thing people want to watch. We even don't remember since when we are so obsessed with this flashing screen. When the most unacceptable or obscene scene showing on the screen, even though people disgusted by it however, most people still staring at it while judging it. We already unconsciously embraced the noise and the delusion we take part to create. Media twisted as a reflection of nowadays public perverted moral standers and mental status. They are creating and feeding each other.

“意境”

what "意境“means?

This word being used frequently when we analyzed and criticized ancient Chinese poetry and literature.

It means artistic conception. Using words to recreate a mood and images for reader's imagination.

Only using description of environments or symbolic things and objects to create certain emotional tones.

Thia methodology also could be applied to imaged based creation.

I am re-reading my favorite ancient Chinese poetry and literature these days. I realized those words, only words, are powerful enough to create a vivid scene, images, mood in my head when I am reading it.

The emotion feedback and understandings of the article from readers, could be very diverse. One simple poem could be understood as romance relation, political ambitions, self-examination, self- confusion, the goal and meanings of life.... And, this is what I want from my work: be the emotion trigger and cause diverse feedback from viewers.

I lost my words again

"I want to say something, but I have nothing to say."

when I start to talk about noise, all I am thinking is about silence, void and isolation.

I finally reach a point that too much emotion and thoughts even anger stuck in my head ready to burst.

silence have much more power than noise. it is the extreme level of noise. when everything filling in the space which is unwanted and meaningless. what you got is void.

when you try to say something even try to shout out loud. there just silence. you can do nothing about it. immersive is a passive thing.

talking and thing not going to help me anymore. i need to act.

how i can explain something without any form? how i can ask someone to imaging a experience or emotion without a environment?

even though i fail to recreate that moment. at less i know where went wrong...I hope..

anyway my outline of the media object is re-adjusted.

noise and multiple realities

Introduction of my "noisy" essay

Since "the Stone Age" human race start to learn how to using "tools" to conquer the nature. We keep going further and further... If we consider after the highly develop automatic machine and energy development in" Industrial age" as a satisfying result of conquer the nature. Then, move to the information age our wild ambition seems to be recreating the "world". Screen and audiovisual media generate other reality which inspired and mirrored from our material world. Images of the material world being digitalized and put online huge database. With the self-organized network. We got the chance to see the "world" and learn to love and hate through the screen from online database. We create an anther world, which is the copy or mirrored from our real world. In that copy version, everything we see is through complex combination of pixels and code. Thanks for the development of audiovisual technology, high resolution display screen finally reach the goal to provide the consumers the ultimate illusion that everything we experienced through the audiovisual screen as same as we experience the real world with our own sense. The idea of pixels start to fading away from our concepts. With the new developed system mountain lion apple company finally decide to take away idea of "pixel" from the screen display setting options, only left with adjustment bars and options of volume. Apple company believe that the resolution of the screen already high enough for consumers just immerse into the screen instead of worrying about the pixels. In this article, I will investigate the fragmentation nature of those multiple realities, then explain the relation between those worlds and how they affect each other. And point out the noise we experience and scattered reality and separated self consciousness and identities. My conclusion is that the dust and noise piling up in both realities (online and offline). The simulation and manipulation nature of those realities change into fragmentation. Facing extremely intense data and confined within a complex mixed reality which full of noise, what left to our psychological experience is silence and void. Without any focus and direction and expectation, we forgot what we were searching for, we just keep browsing into those noise. Expectation and context is absent, we feel totally detached from either world. Left in between, end up nowhere. Generated the sense of detachment from either worlds. Immerse into dust. We couldn't see. It weakened our sense organs. We are facing the void not freedom or self determination. We feel lose. And, this will go on. We have to accept the truth that the world we experienced not only "the one" any more. There no freedom neither imprison. All we got is extremely noisy and silence and void.

Outline and Qs:

1. Multiple realities-----simulation and emulation (web2.0 3.0 AR MR)

2.About experiencing of loss reality.

3.New definition of noise.

4.What is the data dust?

5.The definition of dust in material world.

6.Compare the dust in Hyperreality (online & on screen) dust in material world (off-line & off screen).

7.What's the possibilities when we digitalized the dust from real world. Break it down to pixels and manipulate it and reuse it to recreate a reality?

8.What changed in the process. What the relation between the real dust stuck in between my sticky tape and those scanned and digitalized put on to the screen.

9.Their material body and image in a virtual world.

10.Is that going to happen to us in the future that shatter ourselves' consciousness, personalities and identities into different copies for those multiple realities?

Definition of noise

Noise often being consider as something unwanted unpleasant sound or unwanted random addition to a signal sometimes, being consider as unwanted information or data that not relevant to the hypothesis or theory being investigated or tested. However, my definition of noise covered bigger range.

I believe noise has three distinguishing features.

1. Fragmentation:

Everything scattered into small scale or even micro scale.

2.isolation:

Something don't belong to any exist architecture, structure, system and lose connection, communication to others.

3. True random.

Without any patterns and foreseeable repetition repetition. Summing up the ideas above, noise is something small unwanted, unpredicted, abandoned, isolated materials or elements which doesn't belong to any system.

The aesthetic of noise.

“Noise is often loud, elaborate Interlaced and filigreed—but almost always gradient and highly phenomenological.

Noise is often a potent and transcendent negating intensity—but it is never unassimilable.”

--cracked media

Noise and void.

Noise is something meaningless. However, often potent and transcendent when they gathered together

in an intense way without any given structure. It will present an enhanced level or void and silence.

Within the infinite void we can reach imaginary beauty.

“Originally we had in mind what you might call an imaginary beauty,

a process of basic emptiness with just a few things arising in it.

And then when we actually set to work,

a kind of avalanche came about which corresponded not at all with that

beauty which had seemed to appear to us as an objective. Where do we go then?

Well what we do is go straight on; that way lies, no doubt, a revelation.

I had no idea this was going to happen. I did have an idea something else would happen.

Ideas are one thing and what happens another.”

-- John Cage, "Where are we going? And what are we doing?"
