Research Proposal Jelle Havermans Trimester 2, Lens Based Media 2020

I’d like to write a feminist essay based on actual events in regards to film and popular media culture. I’d like to write something that has a foundation in my personal history and opinion: my views as a young man on gender roles in film. I want to watch (mainstream) films and series from a specific feminist angle. In the essay, I want to look at and write about the film from a personal perspective. So, I’d like to take a modern film and use it as a starting point. I would like to make a more autonomous work of writing as part of a larger body of collective work. I’d like my essays to be part of something bigger. Like a zine or a paper. Something that taps into that feeling of the old school feminist activist zine; cheap but effective. A physical object that you can touch. It’s aesthetics and design should carry the message the zine is telling it’s audience. My art is all about stereotypical portrayal of women in films and series, and specifically the effect this had on me as a boy. My beliefs on women and society have changed drastically, but I still see the gender roles as seen in the world of cinema. I hope to achieve It is a success to me if I can write a coherent reflection on feminism & cinema. I’d like to write two or three essay’s. I would like to measure the text to the extent that I could be produced in a paper or a magazine. A challenge for me is to write in English, since I’m not a native speaker and I still like to produce a well written, professional text.
