Project Proposal

Last year, I practiced different mediums such as sound, light and sculpture. For my graduation project I want to use these experiences, which I gained last year. With this background on photography and video I want to make a video installation. I am going to use the objects that I had collected from Syria in 2013, from destroyed houses and the video footages that I shot in Syria. During my graduation project, research will be revolved around these questions; how we are mediated by news and images, why we like to see violent images from warzones, what is the relationship between image and news, how these images are becoming hyperreal, when does image become a pornography?

During this project, I want to bring a new perspective in the face of this type of events as an artist. I believe artist's duty is transform things into another thing. These events were happening when I was in Turkey. Now I live in Holland and it is also happening here, for example the refugee crisis. It was interesting for me to follow all these news from my phone and my computer when I realized they all become virtual in my mind. I am getting used to the war/refugee-images and consume this type of news, starting to ignore.

This project will be my second project that I did in Syria. First project was a photography project that I made in 2012. The first project was about remaining people who refused to leave the country. However, my graduation project will be about flow of immigration and refugee crisis and what they left behind them. I want to trace their situation from the object, which they left behind them and the images that I shot there.

Practical Steps

For this video project, I am learning Maya software, because I want to scan the objects from Syria and will work with them as an animation. However, the first thing I need to do is to bring all the objects from Istanbul to Rotterdam.

The videos are already divided and tagged footages into two sections. First section that show common images, can be seen on the news. The second section involves the images, which can't be seen on the news.

For my video work I want to make two different versions, one for multi projections screening, second for one channel screening.
