The Huenet is an offline darknet that serves to demonstrate the differences between the public Internet (such as the World Wide Web) and darknets (Like Freenet). This project enables users to write encrypted messages and to comment on anything in the room in which the Huenet takes place. A darknet can be placed anywhere and exist parallel to an existing network. For this project the visitors of the exhibition, which was held in order of the graduation of Piet Zwart Networked Media Students, form a network that can be compared to the public Internet. There are 7 categories to write messages in, and each one has a different color. In the exhibition 7 boxes were placed, for each category one. A person who would want to join the Huenet could grab a package out of one of the boxes and take it to one of the two the booths (“Encryption/Decryption stations”) that were placed for more privacy. The category of the package is revealed after opening the package. The messages also have the corresponding color of the accompanying category. With this project, I want to establish a translation of an anonymous darknet to the physical world and hope to make people more aware of the fact that the public Internet is just one network amongst many.
The Huenet is een offline darknet dat de verschillen tussen het publieke Internet (zoals het World Wide Web) en darknets (zoals Freenet) benadrukt. Dit project maakt het mogelijk voor gebruikers om berichtjes te coderen en zo anoniem te reageren op iets wat zich in de ruimte van The Huenet bevindt. Het darknet kan overal en parallel naast een bestaand netwerk plaatsvinden. Voor dit project vormden de bezoekers van de expositie “Catching Flies in the Alternet”, die werd gehouden ter gelegenheid van het afstuderen van de studenten Networked Media van het Piet Zwart Institute, een netwerk dat vergeleken kan worden met het publieke Internet. Er zijn 7 categorieën om berichten in te schrijven, met elk een eigen kleur. Tijdens de expositie werden 7 dozen geplaatst, voor elke categorie één, en twee “Encryption/Decryption stations”. Wanneer een persoon wilde participeren aan The Huenet kon een pakketje uit een van de dozen worden uitgekozen, om vervolgens in een van de “Encryption/Decryption stations” te worden uitgepakt, voor meer privacy. De gekozen categorie is pas zichtbaar na het uitpakken van het pakketje. De berichtjes hebben ook de kleur van de bijbehorende categorie. Met dit project, wilde ik een vertaling van een anoniem darknet naar de fysieke wereld creëren om zo mensen bewuster te maken van het feit dat het publieke Internet een netwerk onder velen is.
