hackpakt #1: Library-DB

It's a mini project I started in order to learn how databases work and at the same time experiment with different ways of structuring data in order to map my interests and get started with the writing of the project proposal. The exercises I made include the use of sqlite3, python, and flask.

I started to do some tutorials to learn how to develop simple databases with one-to-many and many-to-many structures.

In parallel I tried to keep track of the process and document the steps and the thoughts I had while learning how to code with databases. I inistially started to do this inside the code itself commenting and numerating the steps, then I realized it was a complete mess difficult to read, so I started to write a log diary in a separated .md file

hackpakt #2: Fil Rouge that isn't red but blue

Map menu leeszaal.jpg

Reflecting on the relation between hosting, curating, collecting data and documenting with Kimberley.

During the first Public Moment at Leeszaal, we designed a menu-map building up on the metaphor of the soup dinner that we used to invite people to our event, and trying to combine our interests. Our guests were welcomed, presented the space and the contribution of the evening through the menu-map, and were invited to draw connections and take note on it too. At the end of the evening, a carbon copy of the guests' annotation of the evening has been collected.

Followed a reflection on the results we had, and on how to continue with more intentions in a second version for the next Public Moment at Buitenboel.

hackpakt #3: Bite event

Critical and intimate evaluation of crunchiness, with Chae.

Bite event schedule.jpg

Exploration of different cultural organizations and art spaces started in Cagliari (IT), disguised as an artistic research on crunchiness.

An artistic research on crunchiness, intimate collection of data, cute crappy performative storytelling, disguised as infiltration into different cultural organization and art spaces.

In this project, Chae and I mocked the language of academia and scientific research to justify and conduct a data collection around crunchiness. This would include a series of intimate dialogue-sessions with people about their memories and imaginary of their best crunchy bite, in an attempt to define the perfect crunch. At the same time we started to display our own timeschedule to invite the public to our data collection, to present the overall project and to debrief the final outcome.

During this residency Chae and I started to reflect on how to make public the hidden intimate and pleasurable moments of our stay in Cagliari, in which in fact bits of our work were still present. And also how to embrace cuteness and care as tools to carry the intimate stories that people shared with us.

We decided, then, to be upfront about all the hidden moments in our spare time in which the project around crunchiness was present as well. Our time-schedule became thus a prop to talk about how human dimension and reciprocal care can be brought back into the dry organization of our project, on one hand. And on the other hand, we started a more intentioned reflection on how to manifest a consensual negotiation between work-related activity and care/affect-based relations.

crunchy parasites. (Actually I'm super afraid of crunchy insects)

hackpakt #4: Take away questions that shall not be taken away

Takeaway questions bollenpandje.png

For the Public Moment #3 at Bollenpandje, Kim and I continued our reflections on the relation between hosting, curating, and documenting.

Last time the focus was on how to host an event by creating a surface/ frame for different works to exist together and offer the public entry points to access and navigate the variety of the works.

This time our focus was on how to translate a series of principles for hosting events to a printed take-away publication which would have included snippets of our graduation projects.

Initially we thought of making an index for the zine that would have introduced all the contributions, but then we started to reflect on what was the degree of contextualization needed for an external public which brought us to the question: which public is inhabiting a space like Bollenpandje?

Then instead of making an index to reference the works of our group, we decided to publish this reflection and initiate an open list of questions that should be considered when hosting an event and its public in relation to the chosen venue and its existing community.
