AA Bronson & General Idea

Regarded as a seminal figure in the art and self-publishing world, AA Bronson collaborated for 25 years with Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal under the name General Idea. The group’s early multiples mixed conceptualism, pop, punk, and camp to interrogate issues surrounding gender, the body, authority, queer identity, and pageantry. Working with a variety of media, their work frequently addressed serious subjects with a sense of humour, parody and play. Next to exhibiting internationally, General Idea edited and published File magazine and founded Art Metropole, a Canadian based centre for publishing, archiving, and distributing artists’ multiples, books, and videos. As the AIDS crisis unfolded in the mid to late eighties, their collaborative efforts focussed on AIDS, AZT, and the personal experiences of the disease through the documentation of the eventual deaths of Partz and Zontal in 1994.

As the last living member of General Idea, Bronson turned his attention towards healing. Grappling with life, death, memory, grieving, and trauma, projects such as “AA Bronson’s School for Young Shamans”, brings together work from past and present and manifests a continual engagement with collaborative practices. Next to these activities, he has initiated curatorial projects such as “Learn to Read Art” and “From Sea to Shining Sea”. From 2004-2010 he was the Chief Executive of Printed Matter in New York.

Currently, AA Bronson is in Rotterdam to prepare for an exhibition at the Witte de With entitled, “The Temptation of AA Bronson”, which will take place from September 5 to November 24 2013. We encourage you to join us for this interdepartmental lecture. Please RSVP before October 18 to pzwart-info@hr.nl
