IFFR: 10.30 - 13:30 Michael Snow La Région Centrale @ De Unie (free entry for students)

Set on a deserted mountaintop in wintery North Quebec, this masterpiece of experimental cinema celebrates the cosmic relationships of space and time. A discrete, yet alienating electronic soundtrack accompanies the camera movements, turning 360 degrees and circling in all directions. Made over the course of five days, a robotized camera created moving images that heretofore could no possibly be observed by the human eye. The vertical and horizontal alignment as well as the tracking speed of Snow’s equipment was determined by the machine designed and built by Pierre Abaloos. The camera lens could pass within inches of the ground and zoom into the infinity of the sky. Initially, the camera pans through 360° passes, and then it begins to provide progressively stranger views (on its side, upside down) through circular and back-and-forth motions. The last hour culminates with unbelievably high speed twisting and swirling motions rendering dynamic color and line abstractions. The weird soundtrack was constructed from the electronic sounds of the programmed controls. Arguably the most spectacular experimental film made anywhere in the world.
