Open: 19:30 Start: 20:00 End: 01:00
No other medium has been declared dead and got resurrected as often as the compact audiocassette. Since its introduction in 1962 it has transgressed barriers between popular and underground culture, stimulated home recording and produced diverse artworks in various disciplines. The cassette is obviously more than just a nostalgic container of auditive information. Throughout the years many alternative uses of the medium have sprung up. Inventors, benders and hackers are intrigued by it's possibilities even today. During this cassette theme night we will take a look at these alternative forms of cassette technology and how they came to be. This to answer one question: How can unorthodox uses of cassette technology contribute to our current way of life?
This thematic event is curated by Niek Hilkmann (NL) and will be comprised of several speakers, films, performances and presentations. The prodigious Arie Altena (NL), affiliated with V2_ and Sonic Acts, will present the occasion and shall not hesitate to ask critical questions when necessary. Extraordinary engineer and whizzkid Joseph Knierzinger (AT) will give a demonstration of his invention: a theremin controlled cassette player. Teacher, programmer and media-artist Michael Murtaugh (CA) will talk about Data Radio, his recent project revolving around the immense tape archive of Erkki Kurenniemi (FI). The artist Babette Kleijn (NL) will give an insider testimony about cassette swap culture and it’s connection to teletekst. Last but not least, film maker Second Modul (RU) will screen one of her glitch tape movies. All in all, an interesting and entertaining happening!
