5.2.2 Integrated Formative Assessment: Proposal Phase (Trimester 4)
- The second integrated assessment is in the fourth trimester and evolves around the graduation project proposal. Passing this integrated formative assessment allows the ECTS for third and fourth terms to be awarded.
- In the proposal you analyse the questions and methods running through the work you have realized so far, formulate an artistic question and approach for further research, and establish a critical framework relevant to your practice. The graduation project proposal marks the transition from the first to the second stage of the study programme, and should thus give evidence of your ability to use what you have learned in the first stage to inform and steer a self-directed artistic research project.
- The assessment criteria for the Graduation Project proposal are:
• The ability to select appropriate topics for advanced research. • The ability to develop and undertake a suitable strategy for research. • The ability to critically reflect upon, analyse and evaluate work already undertaken and to use the knowledge gained to (re)define the aims and direction of future practice. • The ability to describe and motivate objectives, topics and methods in a written proposal.
- The assessment panel also takes into account whether the proposed project is realistic in scale and ambition, considering the limited time frame for the graduation project. This integrated assessment is called Proposal Phase and is supported through the Graduate Research Seminar.
- Prior to the assessment process you must archive documentation and elements of the work and research you wish to submit for examination. We will not pass people who have not delivered appropriate documentation of their work on time.
ADDITIONAL NOTES: Master of Arts in Fine Art & Design. Lens-Based Media. Supplement to Course Handbook in relation to COVID-19
Due to the shift to online education as part of a series of measures to respond to the spreading of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the Netherlands, the following changes were made to the curriculum and assessments procedures. This supplement was made in part from deriving and adapting to the L-BASED context, elements from the WOLT guideline “Exams at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences”.
This document outlines the standard agreed-upon procedures for Graduation Assessment and then point by point describes adjustment made in relation to COVID-19. If this document is updated, the new version will be made available to the students, tutors, and exam commission.
Brief Outline of the Adjustments to the Standard Procedure for Integrated Summative Assessment: Graduate Project Proposal (Trimester 4)
All the integrated assessments, both formative and summative, involve a formal presentation to a panel of tutors across both the specialisations of the course and chaired by the course director. This allows a check that there is a consensus across the department as to the level of achievement of each student and acts as a check on the individual tutors marking the summative assessments.
The overall process has been unchanged; however, some aspects of what material is assessed and how it will be assessed have been modified:
The final assessment will be done online via a video chat.
As usual, it is expected students will have an overall presentation regarding a project proposal for the graduation project to be executed in the final two terms of the program. However, due to the current situation it is possible the material means to produce a definitive final work will be significantly limited and possibly affect the associated research, we suggest at this point that you consider presenting options for creating graduation work that can be both created and exhibited in a hybrid (combination of online and offline) form.
During the Assessment students will be invited to discuss the combination of strategies they have chosen. The range of work they show must continue to meet the standard assessment criteria as described in the handbook.
