Data Diary

In this diary I document the search for the destination of my digital data. It consists of diary entries I wrote during the search, in combination with pictures that I took whilst visiting these places. Added to that are the data lists with emails, places and phone calls which were related to my visits. I followed my own digital data into the physical world. Following my data I took pictures and wrote texts about my discoveries. Questions arised about control and information transparency in today's life, to which I tried to find answers along the way.I wanted to know what happens with my digital data. I wanted to see if it’s possible to keep control of my data. In order to see if that’s possible I had to understand the digital world first. Not only the theoretical side but also the physical infrastructure.

NAKED
I collect digital information, and print this in analogue files. This information is from the visitors of a specific festival/exhibition they are visiting. This project is exhibited at that festival/exhibition and is then interactive with its specific visitors. I gather digital information on the visitors before the specific festival/exhibition, without hacking, and print this in analogue files. During the specific festival/exhibition the visitors will be confronted with their digital information in his or her own file. I am present at the festival/exhibition and hand over the file to the person whom it concerns. I want to create awareness amongst people that seemingly innocent activities on the internet can lead to the accidental creation of new digital identities. People disclose a lot of information online, to invisible, unknown parties. Letting them touch the analogue volume of their information makes it real and understandable.

1000 Years later
Images of Rotterdam Central Station, still in construction. Humanity has long since been extinct. I took pictures of the Rotterdam Central Station, whilst it was in construction. I manipulated them in such a way to represent a time when humanity has not been around for at least a decade. I can’t remember a time when the Central Station in Rotterdam was not in construction. I was annoyed at the central station, wanted it to be over already. As a reaction to this idea I decided it would never be finished, it would stop now, and stay like this forever.
