Yalou's notes

My interpetation

Three scratch images. Ieva finds it childfull playfullness. Ieva went to discover the interactive art piece. She is interested in what it means. "You can remove it, but not bring it back?" Ieva thinks it is about discovering things. Maybe even about playfulness and discovering it.

What?

This is an experiment. Something she wanted to try for a long time. Since she came here she almost forgot her texturizing side with art. And it also fits to here research. That is related to the unspeakable, the unknown. This can be plenty of things. This is an experimental approach and a work in progress. It is about discovering new things.

How?

She thought of it when she had the portrait assignment. It is an image of Yalou and it is abstract. She wanted to give it to Yalou and let her write on it. So that Yalou would not know what it is but it would add an extra layer to it. An example would be she creating a childhood image and Yalou writing on the photo about her childhood. Discovery of the childhood she created. It is quite open.

You print the picture, and you have to cover the image with fat. She used butter and chalk on top of it. The butter allows the chalk to be glued to the photo. And then another layer of painting is separated of the lay of chalk. So, it is three layers and the photo.

She is more interested in the textual aspect.

Why?

This textual piece is part of the research for the Eye project. She also find this making sense and she has done this a lot before. And right now this art piece fits to her research and she feels a connection to the content. It is a rediscovery technique and playful technique. It is also very stable between the conceptional and the technique.

Would you use this for the Eye project?

I would not make it this exact way. I do think that my research is about the things that you can see and what you cannot see. There is world of possibilities with so many different subjects. It is a different approach of the same concept. It has a connection with the unconscious mind and discover yourself and the unknown you.

Choices?

For this art piece, she experimented, and she wants to do this more. Change the color underneath and see what the possibilities are for this. Because this is an experiment she decided to choose simple ways. She was more focust on if it was working than how it would look when it works.

What came before?

In a broader sence. She has always been more interesting in the abstraction and the materials. She has always been working with wood, painting and really interested in materials. And things that are not presented realistically. She was painting the last year connects to this project. She was painting landscapes but it was not equal to the realistic view. More realisticly is the video she made with Yalou about the unknown, unspeakable.

What will follow?

So this afternoon she will be working on this. And she attends to apply these techniques for Cihads project. And she wants to connect it to another project that she created in the past. And hopefully she will find some interesting results.

How does it change?

She thinks that this could be an open work. So what she likes about the last layer, that it could be anything. I t could change completely the meaning of the piece itself. Or it could add other images. It is a very open piece but change the meaning of the photo.

How could it be translated?

For the video, for example. She is thinking in formal aspects. She has been experimenting in video. How can she work with audio and video? When you see the video, you see the image and the voice, but what if we disconnect this. It could be translated this way.

Introvert/Extravert?

The process is very introvert. Because it is about discovering things innerly. And the outcome is extraverted.

Ieva's notes

What?

This is an experiment, something I wanted to try for a long time because since I came here I forgot about the plastic part, that I did painting and sculpture before. And I wanted to try this technique because I feel it fit my conceptual research which is related to the unspeakable, unknown, things that we are discovering in general, which is a broad theme. This is an experimental approach.

How?

I first thought about it when we had the assignment for Res. It was a picture I took of Yalou but I blurred the image to make it abstract. I wanted to make this layer and give it to you to write on to discover the image underneath. You cannot see the full image, but you can see it where you wrote something down. I see it like a diary that I invite you to write on, and I would choose an image that fits your childhood and you would see my idea of your childhood by writing and removing the artwork. The work is very open, it depends a lot on your choise, the photo underneath, the presentation and the instructions given to the spectators.

I used 3 layers to cover the picture. The batter was used to cover the picture and then I put powder and acrylic paint on top of it. The batter allows the powder to be glued to the photo, and the layer of acrylic paint is separated from the layer of the powder, so you can easily remove it to discover the photo.

Why?

I am interested in plastic, more touchable aspects. I have the feeling my research goes through an intention or an interest about the things you can see and the things you cannot see and from that there is an overwhelming world of possibilities that allows you to speak about many different subjects. It is related to subconscious, psychological processes of the mind, discovering yourself and who you are. I have always been experimenting in fine arts and we used lots of techniques and now I think this specific technique fits with my research and I have a connection with the concept. It made me rediscovered a technique that fit my project and research topic and it gave me joy and made me feel good.

Choices?

For the blacked out picture, it was an experiment and I would like to experiment more with the final layer and I need the colour that would cover the photo underneath. As this was the first experiment I used the most simple paintings that I had, and I decided to choose a dark colour to cover the photographs.

What came before?

I think in a broader sense, I have always been interested in the abstraction, the materials, I have always been working with wood and painting, working with rough materials. There is always the tension between representation and abstraction. I feel an attraction to the non representation of something. What I have been painting for the past years, I was heading towards this topic. More specifically, it was a video Yalou and I made about vocal cords and it is another possibility about the unknown and the inside, related to this project in a conceptual way.

What will follow?

This afternoon I will be working on this, I will try to apply these ideas and these techniques for Cihad's assessment. I will connect it to the project I made about fashion photography (the removed bodies of the models) I will see what happens with this and hopefully will have interesting results to follow.

How does it change?

I think that this could be an open work, so what I like about the final layer is that it could be anything, it could completely change the meaning of the piece itself, the meaning of the photograph or the image, or it could add other meanings, but it could be anything, so it's very open.

How could it be translated?

For the video, for example, I am thinking in formal aspects because I think it's easier for me to think through formal aspects. I have been experimenting in video how you can work with sound and image, for example, the video that I made with Yalou about the vocal chords. When you see the visuals you here the voice. but what if we disconnect one from another, what if you see an image- you don't hear anything and vice versa. It could be translated in this way.

Introvert/Extrovert?

I think the process is very introverted, because It is about discovering things and this is more of an internal process, but the outcome is extrovert because I am pretending to share it and inviting people to participate.
