Eligibility

  • MC de Visser & Volkskracht - offer student grants
  • Always just call up to make sure that the idea fits the grant - pitch the project on the phone and see what the feedback is - talk to grant recipients too -
  • even if it's a rolling deadline find out what the cut off dates are - e.g. on Mar 15th they'll deal with all the grants at once

Gathering Requirements

  • Mondriaan - Artist Start -
  • General requirements - Written Requirements (Artist Bio, CV, Project Description + Letters (Residencies, Production Companies, Tutors - this makes a big difference and can really help)
  • Really examine the grant requirements/criteria

Evaluation Criteria

  • Artistic Quality - is the project original? does it contribute to contemporary discourse? is it meaningful and impactful?
  • Capability - do you have what it takes? Does it make sense for your previous experience?
  • Feasability - is the budget appropriate? Who's the crew? Have you thought about all your collaborators?
  • Progress Indicator - e.g. once you secure a producer for a film (thats a progress indicator); perhaps you have a pilot of a scene filmed
  • Check the assessment criteria and really consider whether you're answering every question

Structure

WRITING TIPS

  • start with the concrete reality (or the conclusion) not the beginning. Don't be deductive. Be clear and explainatory
  • You dont know the jurors - dont use art speak - consider your audience - be personal and clear - dont be intelligent - use simple sentences and be as clear as possible
  • Clarity - limit jargon and art speak, consider yours is one of many. How would you pitch it to your parents?
  • Write for your audience - be enthusiastic, persuasiveness, significance
  • Your interests dont equal your interests / your knowledge is not there knowledge
  • the grant is not a lecture on your idiosyncratic interests
  • you can fill in the criteria using
  • get a second reader - theres things you wont see or might assume

INTRO - THE ELEVATOR PITCH

  • what how why? along with dates and budgetary needs
  • whats the project? What do you want to achieve. Give step by step goals: e.g. 1) refining the scope of the project 2) develop a participatory and ethical film practice 3) create a photo diary and find locations for deeper investigation 4) presenting as an exhibition or publication
  • describe what you're doing during the grant period
  • describe the outcomes / goals
  • everyone has interdisciplinary projects now - so you have to be very simple, precise, and detailed.
  • dont describe yourself at first - describe the project

CONTEXTS

  • describe who you are, which ideas you're working with
  • your personal motivation and broader context

PROJECT DESCRIPTION (the what)

  • Give more detail about the project - dont be vague
  • is it single channel? Multi-channel
  • if you dont know what youre doing - just make it up - give some options e.g. it could be a documentary or it could be a film that looks like this... +
  • Give the juror some mental images we can work with

OUTCOMES (the why?)

  • what are the expected results
  • the big significance

METHODOLOGY (how?)

  • this section should respons directly to outcome -how will you achieve those results
  • timeline ... in march, april, may

IMPACT ON CAREER / MERIT

  • how is this building on your work
  • what is it adding to your portfolio
  • maybe its for a show so you need funding for a show
  • maybe you move from video art to working with a crew and production company
  • maybe now its a very personal film - youre making yourself really vulnerable
  • are there new challenges or artistic risks? maybe you're filming abroad, or you need a translator.
  • It needs to feel like its a big step for the artist
  • Will you learn anything from this?

COMMUNICATION & PRESENTATION

  • Publications, talks, open studios, talks,
  • who is your audience? art audience, which community? are you trying to make work for a more general audience? VPRO?
  • even if you dont know the exhibition venue - give some ideas and options that make sense
  • marketing - how will you promote the work, encourage and engage your audience - trailers, posters, interviews, etc.

BUDGET

  • make sure your budget balances
  • Diversify your income sources e.g. Piet Zwart Institue may let you use editing equipment so that could be the equivalent for 5000euro
  • make sure you breakdown your costs e.g. Personal fee 5000 so thats 1000 for 5 months. Explain how you came up with the numbers

PORTFOLIO

  • if you dont choose all your work - be specific
  • good to show documentation if its installed work
  • attachments - can make a treatment + moodboard + storyboard + scripts
  • the juror will only spend 10/15min looking through your additional attachments
