Annotation:

  • The film is focused on three women (Virginia Woolf(1), Laura Brown(2) and Clarissa Vaughan(3)) from different generation and time (1923, 1951, 2001), that somehow are connected by the book Mrs. Dalloway from Virginia Woolf.
  • Each characters struggles with her life, freedom and love and dealing with thoughts about suicide.
  • The movie is not about food, but there are key scenes were food plays a role and is a metaphor about a person's thought.


  • Making a cake for daddy's birthday (2) to show we love him. Do we need to make the cake? Yes we do.
  • Making favorite crabdish for Richard who has Aids. Crabs are like moving in sink (3)
  • Pounding meat, cracking of carcas. Cutting meat and cracking eggs (1). Go get ginger in London for the special visitors. Annoyed maid.
  • To make the cake, grease the pan, flower zeven with son. Baking the cake to show love. First attempt of the cake is a failure. Does this say anything of the lack of love from Laura to her husband? Then the neighbour of Laura visited the house. They have a conversation and get intimate and kiss. It looks like Laura actually have feelings for the female neighbour, but somehow the neighbour looks uncomfortable after the kiss and denies that it was bad. Laura somehow is a bit agetated and throws after the neighbour left the failed cake 'resoluut' in the trash bin. Everything is witnessed by Laura's son. (min. 41.00).
  • Laura(2) decides to make a new cake, not shown (to lay off her emotions?). (min 47.00).
  • Cracking eggs, splitting eigeel (scheiden). Gay/lesbian --> Richard and Clarissa (3) (51.00).
  • Cake is ready and is put on the table (57.00). Cake is perfect (2).
  • Chopping vegetables, Mr. Woolf looks for Virginia (1.14 min) (1).
  • Father cuts the cake, happy birthday. Father explains to son how he and mother met and how much he likes her (2). You see Laura being uncomfortable, not liking it (1.30 min).
  • Richard committed suicide in front of Clarissa. He lived for her, and she lived for him. He wrote a book based on her. Throwing away luxerious food Clarissa made for Richard's party (1.35 min, 3).
