There is something inside us that makes us seek for control

Who are we? Where do we come from? These are fundamental questions we humans raise. To answer these questions we need to know about our surroundings and our relations to these surroundings.

When we first came out of our caves/When we made our first step on this planet we where part of a system where we were hunters but also the prey; we pointed our primitive spears towards (small) animals in order to obtain their meat, but we are also hunted by large cats/large animals. In order to survive we pointed the same spears also towards them, our natural enemies. The spear served as a tool for control. To have control over the foodchain both positive as negative.

With the development of the modern humans natural enemies disappeared due to extinction or due to our technological development, meaning humans find better ways to defend themselves. Spears where interchanged for more advanced weapons, but the movement and its goal stayed the same; to point and hit, to control the enemy or the unknown. And maybe due to the lack of natural enemies we point these advanced weapons more and more towards ourselves. We use these advanced weapons to explore, to conquer and to kill. By doing so we get control over our surroundings and its inhabitants. But to be able to keep control humans need to give meaning and monitor whats inside or outside its borders.

Humans have a tendency to label. By labeling we bring order and order defines us versus them and also in a hierarchical way. To label things we need to observe. In 'We live in Public' we saw the effects of confinement on individuals. The experiment was about the forming of a new open society which was observable to an outside audience by numerous of web cams. There was no space private and during the experiment you saw how the people respond and behave to this freedomless society and how they changed from being free and happy to being stressed and trapped.

NOTES: With control humans are able to provide a safe environment for themselves, to develop and to preserve its culture.

Meaning?

Control is one of the conditions to answer the questions earlier raised.
