The film takes place in Glen Allan, Mississippi during the mid-1900s, when there was segregation between white and black people. The film shows the grow and development of a young boy into a young adolescent. From being an illterated boy to a person with high interest in reading.
Food is very limited depicted in the movie, but when it is shown it is highly connected to emotions and feelings.
Squeezing of an ice cream when a KKK-member approaches popa and calls him names. Anger is shown in the squeezing of the ice cream.
Cliff's food is being taken by older classmates. Another classmate insists to give it back to cliff.
Colored people had a few heroes, when they loose everybody is hurt by it.
Family dinner: supper, potato pie. Seduction of man to woman, sitting on his lap.
Church service goes into big feast. 'Paneren', frying chicken breast. Lots of hands are visible in the scene. Hands of man pounding, handling the chicken.
Cliff starts to work for a white lady. The white lady Maybry is happy with him and urges him to follow his dreams and starting to read. They have lunch together (soup). Discussion about fieldworkers (nobody should be a field worker) and books. Maybry shows compassion with Cliff and they become friends.
