What are you making?

I am making lens-based work under the theme transitional period and displacement and it’s still in progress. As I just moved here one month ago so I just want to use this transitional time to trying to collect material and record things I saw because I can spot a lot of the unfamiliar things in this city which excite me. And surprisingly I found something that is normal in my own country but here is not. It is three color fabrics tied around the tree. From this image, I try to create a sculpture that represent it by using unrelated material which is colorful dishwashing sponge. I recorded a video of it. I think this could be a good beginning of this project. So why you making it?

So why you making it?

I am interested in ordinary objects and it’s context. For this project, I saw the three colors fabrics that tied around the tree which could normally be found in the countryside of Thailand, but I also saw this kind of thing in the city center of Rotterdam. It’s very displaced and unusual to see it here. So I try to expand my video work based on this.

How does this relate to other things you've made?

It could be the format of the practice and outcome as I’m always creating work in a photography or video format.

So you also said that it relates because of the the mediums you use photo or video. Is there any other common theme apart from the medium?

It could be the color. I like using vivid color.

'Why do you think that is? Like to the joyful and playfulness?

It might be my personal interest. I like to distort the reality using color that doesn’t seem to be real. Creating a playful, uncanny and surreal environment.

How is it different to the other things you've made?

Well, normally in my photography, I always like playing around with the objects, but I didn't thinking about the meaning behind those objects. It’s quite experimental and intuitive like previous work. But in this time, I deeply concerned about the hidden meaning in the objects and its context.

So what are the most significant choices? You've made recently?

I tried to observe more and create the work that based on the meaning of object. For example, I saw three color fabrics tied to the tree and it’s related to the spiritual issue and after that, I saw this the dishwashing sponge, which has exactly the same colors with the this three color fabrics. Those two thing has nothing connected in terms of meaning and context, but I tried to transfer the meaning of one object onto another object. I think it's the way of experimenting, and I still trying to explore more.

You're looking for meaning in the objects. So could you speak a bit little bit more about that?

I think different people also have different perspectives towards the same object so it's very interesting if I can shift or manipulate people’s thoughts they have towards the object, I mean, I try to break thing down and make them dysfunctional and construct some new meaning of the object. I love to change the interpretation of things.

But you also said you're interested in how other people have different meanings to objects?

Yes, exactly. For example, the three color fabrics, you might not related or have totally have no idea what it is. But I can relate to it. It’s a little thing that I found pretty interesting.
