Can Gaming Make A Better world?

The title of this karaoke project is a direct reference to the TED talk by Jane McGonigal "Gaming Can Make A Better World".

Games like World of Warcraft give players the means to save worlds, and incentive to learn the habits of heroes. What if we could harness this gamer power to solve real-world problems? Jane McGonigal says we can, and explains how.

Karaoke

We (Alex, Chae, Erica, Mitsa and Kamo) chose karaoke because...

Karaoke is a playful format (a game?) that makes the player follow the lyrics and play along. While you are singing the song you get to spend some time with the lyrics as well - some pay attention to them, others are more concentrating on keeping up with the tempo. However, you definitely pay more attention to them than when simply listening to the song.

Rewriting a symbolic song: The process started with reflecting on the readings as a group and putting in place key phrases that stuck with us. Things we wanted to bring up when we were writing the new lines. While rewriting someone else's lyrics, we were following the number of syllabises in order to keep the rhythm.

History

First attempt

On the Tuesday 1st February 2022, We shared the first attempt of our karaoke.

First Version of Lyrics:
conrad: let's get straight into it!
I wake up early everyday to be the best Don't close the mac cuz there's no need for me to rest My job is like a game that's why I feel so blessed Oh, a, oh
They took the funlife out of my creativity  (Kamo but") I am responsible for my stability (Kamo "And") My mentor said "self-motivation is the key!"
20 points I did a good job! 50 points I did a better job
Gaming can make a merrier world Gaming can make a happier world

Edits on the lyrics

Let's get straight into it!
I wake up early everyday to be the best
Don't close the mac cause there's no need for me to rest
My job is like a game but why I feel so stressed
Oh, a, oh
They took the fun out of my creativity (BUT) I am responsible for my stability (AND) My mentor said, "Self-managing is the key!"
20 points I did a good job! 50 points I did a better job!
Gaming can make a better world Gaming can make a happier world
If you fail then don't complain
Waiting the host to let me enter the zoom call Checking my emails, while I am having healthy lunch We play competing games with colleages just for fun
Oh-a oh-a Is this my leisure time? Oh-a oh-a Is this my working time?
Gaming can boost your fearless side Gaming can fix your broken appetite Make work fun and get stuff done For my body and through my apps
Oh-a-aho oh Oh-a-aho oh
(break)
Gaming can heal your anxious mind Gaming can organise your life Gaming can make your inner child shine
If you fail then don't complain Make work fun and get stuff done Try your best and improve yourself
I am my workplace star Although my workplace sucks
Gaming can make a merrier world Gaming can make a healthier world Gaming can make a practical world Gaming can make an easier world Gaming can change your boring job Gaming can make you play at work Gaming can help poor people find a job Gaming can stop humanity's fall Gaming can stop humanity's war

Finalizing the lyrics

The karaoke project became part of the final Special Issue #17 Publication. In order to finalise the lyrics, we re-visited them after a while. That turned out to be a great approach: since last time we worked on them, we have read more and reflected on it in class, in our casual conversations.
Final edits:
-there was a version that Mitsa worked on, right? let's add it here [tba]
-Chae's edits [tba]
-Chae and Alex finalising them in the studio [tba]

Interesting Points

  • Who is the narrator in this lyric? Who is 'I'?
