Project proposal & notes

1 What do you want to make?

My is based on the garden of my childhood fantasies, a place where the real and the unreal met, feeding my imagination, dreams and fears. The garden and its phenomena, placed in the yard of my grandmother in Romania has influenced my perception of the surroundings. Through is macro and microscopic creatures, humans and non-humans it has shaped not a happy-forever-after Disney world but an index of events and their participants through which I have been making sense/interpreting/sensing - with my tentacles * -  the world. There are no such dichotomies as good or bad in the garden, as everything has an ambivalence which has left marks and prints. It is a cruel, yet naive universe of radical openness, vulgarity, melodrama, grace and love.

I aim to represent the garden through a multimedia installation, using sculpture, video and maybe performance.

Elements of installation:

- blown out of proportion ceramic sculptures of plants in the garden, spiders, bugs, liquids, trash, dust, grass

- objects made out of metal or fabric

- living plants?

Dimensions: earthly and sky, up and low

- a camera/terrarium with growing plants in it that takes pictures

- Video:

DON’T KNOW YET

How does video interact with all the other pieces in the installation?

Sounds?

How to arrange objects in space

* who am I in this story? Am I a human being? Am I a creature? Am I me or do I embellish this character in another voice?

The garden is a SHE ?

Plants have their healing use.

Create images.

MAKE A LEGSICON LIKE LAURE PROVOUST!

MAKE A “SCENARIO” AND CHARACTER LIST

GRANDMOTHER = IDYLLIC NATURAL PAST

MOTHER = COMMUNISM, MODERNISM, BOOMER

ME = KID OF THE INTERNET

WHO ARE THE MALE FIGURES?

2 How do you plan to make it?

reading

- UNDERSTANDING NARRATION AND INSTALLATION TECHNIQUES

- UNDERSTANDING ECOLOGY, HUMAN AND NON-HUMAN RELATIONSHIP, what is human and non-human, the seen and the unseen

writing

Installation and film as narration => use writing as a tool for understanding the world of the project and for constructing the thesis

and practice:

Making images through : assemblage of objects and sculptures: my sculptures will be like images & moving images trough film

Writing [as dreaming] and making [as waking up]  hand in hand

SCULPTURE = IMAGE

3 What is your timetable?

1. Sculpt [glaze, fire]  + write: October, November, December

-try make multiple sculptures of the same kind

2. Make video

3. Arrange objects together, see how they fit

Always keep writing and takin notes

4 Why do you want to make it?

Kiki Smith:

“My work was very autobiographical. In the pieces about birth I was trying to reconcile an ambivalent relationship to being here on earth because earth is a difficult place to be sometimes. Individually the pieces are about other things, but I know they're basically about me saying I have to learn to be here. I made some stained-glass paintings with images of babies being born - half in half out - and It was like me saying, I'm sitting on the fence, I have to make some decision about being here."

5 Who can help you and how?

FIND A MENTOR FOR THIS YEAR [maybe Tai Shani]

Geert Lovink, Natasha

6 Relation to previous practice

Do I want o keep making this and build a practice out of it or is it just a phase?

THIS GARDEN IS NOT JUST WITH “NATURAL” ELEMENTS DEVOID OF THE “WORLD OUTSIDE” BUT IT IS IMBUED WITH THE TRANSITION THAT I TALK ABOUT IN KID OF THE INTERNET. IT INCORPORATES THE INTERNET CABLES, TRASH, POLLUTION AND SO ON. CONTEMPORARY FANTASTIC WORLD, BRIDGING THE PRESENT WITH THE PAST, THEY MELT INTO EACH OTHER

7 Relation to a larger context

Ecology, storytelling/narration, speculative fiction, ways of co-existing
