Irma 's reflection

As we say in Dutch 'Het was een zware bevalling' It was a difficult childbirth, but of course this is no guaranty for a beautiful baby. In the starting point of this assignment, my intention was to use it to work with my hands and to create something that could be done in a few days. I have the habit to think big, and this assignment turned out the become six flipbooks in one. I wanted to connect the flipbook to some of my research and had the idea to work with the theme of trepanation, making a hole in the skull of a living person to create a higher consciousness.

The flipbook is a self-help book for trepanation, in 6 steps. I used found footage from the trepanation from the artist Amanda Feilding. I tried to re-mix her video and create a contemporary image, although I think I didn't manage to get rid of this 70's look of the footage. It was important for me to finish this work, so I did. Conceptually I think it leans on two feet. I like the concept of taking something wish sounds weird or freaky to some people and try to make it appealing using persuasive communication techniques. The theory of trepanation could be interesting to use but maybe doesn't fit with the flipbook medium. Could it be interesting to remake a modern version, like a DoItYourself tutorial/website or self-help book?
