Jos de Mul - The work of art in the age of digital recombination

We have always used media. There is no difference in prehistoric painters and media artists.

Media = are not innocent instruments and is generally assumed that media play a crucial role in the configuration (samenstellen/beinvloeden) of the human mind and experience.

Media = means for presenting information.

Media are interfaces that mediate (bemiddelt) between us and the world (designation), me and you (communication), us and ourselves (self understanding).

Aesthetic (kunstgevoel/schoonheidsleer) experience is no exception --> artistic media are interfaces that structure the imagination of the artist, the work of art itself and its reception.

Aim of the paper: To contribute to the reflection by analyzing the way the computer interface constitutes and structures aesthetic experience.

Walter Benjamin: Cult value is replaced by Exhibition value.

De Mul: the thesis (stelling) I will defend in this paper is: - In the age of digital recombination the database constitutes (format) the ontological model (= set of concepts) of the work of art.
